Fished yesterday with John Kail from Gloucester, Mass. Plan was to catch mutton Snapper, Grouper and then look for Tuna, Sails or Wahoo.
Hit the first spot where I usually find Mutton Snapper. Got the chum going and dropped 3 rods to the bottom. All were with 12 feet of 30 lb Flourocarbon leader and a 2 oz egg sinker slider rig.Live Pinfish were the baits. Waited about 10 minutes and wham ....John's rod bent over....he started cranking and one of the other rods went so I picked it up. Johns had a nice 10 pound Mutton Snapper....as soon as he pulled it in the third rod went off....My fish came in and it was a 10 pound Amberjack...threw him back... John also caught an AJ...the next 1 1/2 hours we caught another 4 Mutton Snapper up to 12 pounds and a few Amberjacks. Then the Sharpnose Sharks took over so we left and moved to another spot to find Grouper. We pulled up 2 nice Red Hinds right off the bat and then it slowed down a little. Had a few nice hits from Grouper at least 30 pounds and they all cut off in the rocks. Moved again and pulled in 3 Yellowjacks between 10 and 20 pounds. A nice Mutton Snapper came up with just a head and a sloppy shark bite on it. Moved again and picked up a Yellowmouth Grouper, 2 Red Grouper, a 20 Pound Amberjack. a few more Sharks and had a bunch of Grouper cutoffs. The last part of the plan was not gonna happen due to the water coler being a brown/green all the way out to 250 feet.We checked the Sub wreck and no action.
In between moves John threw at busting Bonito but they were honed in on Mahua (Bay Anchovies) and were down as fast as they came up.
Every guide had the same report...no surface action but good bottom. I think the dirty water is part hurricane run-off from the Gulf and an Algae bloom that Fish and Wildlife has been tracking.
Only pic I took was of this marauding school of Jack Crevalle.
