I have two Slammer 360s that I used all season on bass, blues, and some albie duty. After every trip I rinsed them with a slow stream of cool fresh water and oiled them.

When I broke them down for their end of the season maintenance one of them had corrosion on the main shaft and on the rear bushing, the other was fine. I did notice the rear cap does not seem to be water tight so I'm sure it is how the water got in.

My questions are: Has anyone else had this problem with their Slammers? Are the Penn SSGs sealed any better? Does anyone have any positive or negative experience with the SSG's?

I observed the same conditions with my 360. I use the reel very frrquently and rinse it after every use. But very few reels are really sealed against all water and moisture intrusion.

I took my reel completely apart and cleaned all the components. Then greased everythuing and reassembled it. It works just as well as when I got it. I do this to all my reels each fall/winter regardless of condition.

i find that the penns all seem to allow some moisture in, and do corrode a bit. however, if the corrosion isn't effecting performance yet, i wouldn't worry too much about it.

there's a trade off in using penns, i think. they are not as expensive as some other reels, and perform well. they do however, breakdown under heavy use or after a while. the good news though, is that they are more easily fixed than other reels. a good dealer can have them up and running pretty easily. with shimanos, they often have to go back to the factory, which is a pain, and is time-consuming. and it may be expensive, i'm not sure.

My first Slammer 360 completely corroded (as in to dust) inside in 1.5 seasons. I liked it while it worked though so I bought another. I had cleaned it that way I cleaned all of my Penn SS reels. Spray it down lightly and oil as needed. Looks like they may need a little more attention than I am going to give them.
