Hello,
I am wondering if anyone has any tips, advice, or experiences they can share?
I have been kayaking for 5yrs. I have always wondered how successful guys are.
I enjoy surf casting and bait fishing, but always thought how guys make out in a kayak and where some spots could be.
Great weather huh? traffic is a real mess..
Thanks
Brian

You may want to post this in the Kayak forum as well:

At least a couple of the moderators here 'yak-fish on a regular basis. All I can offer is advice on canoeing in Narragansett Bay (hint: you're better off kayaking if you value your life (#$119) ).

I have done quite a bit of kayak fishing in freshwater...(zippo salf water experiance...I think next year)...I have a sit on top (Wilderness Systems Tarpon 140) which makes casting a little easier than a SIK, as I can stand on the thing without too much trouble...pretty stable.
Advice?
1) PFD and other associated safety gear
2) Rudder to control your drift
3) A milk crate for all that gear with a couple rod holders attached to it
4) I have a depth/fish finder on mine, but it isn't all that necessary for salt applicaitons.
5) Some kind of light if you plan to be out at night so other boaters can see you
6) GPS if you have one
7) a good paddle with a leash
Some folks use outriggers for additional stability in the breakers.
Others may have more info on this subject. Also there's a pretty decent website for kayak fishing...kayakfishingstuff.com. I found lots of hints and tricks on how to rig a yak for fishing.
Good luck

SW fishing from a kayak will change you forever..... You will discover all sorts of places that hold fish that you didn't know existed. Or that you had looked at from afar and thought, "Damn, That's fishy water!" OH yeah, go for it!

For you Tarpon users,
I picked up a trick in Florida from some yakers fishing the Mosquito Lagoon. They were from an Alanta Flyfishing Club.
They used a pole down thru the scupper holes to anchor their yaks in the best location for fly fishing in the narrow creeks that lace the mangroves down there.
They find a creek flowing into a slighly deeper creek (tidal current) and place their yak in the best spot to reach the flow on a dropping tide and stake it with a rod or pole that fits thru the scupper whole and into the bottom of the creek.
Using a second stake, you can actually set your angle up to clear your back cast and not have to worry about current or breeze shifting your yak out of line.
They pick off fish stacked up waiting for bait to be carried out of the side creek as the tide drops.
This should work well in many of the salt creeks flowing out to the sea from the land side in New England and the Northeast! Scorton on the Cape, Oak Orchard in Maine, Hudson River in NY, etc.
When you have to move "pulling the up stakes" is real simple! :brow
PS: I sold one of my Pungos! Kept the P-140 for the gal pal and will be using the Tarpon 160i forever! --126-3-

Brian,
I fish from a kayak all the time. Its pretty easy and there's nothing like getting towed around by a 10lb fish.
Here's what you need to do.. 1)life preserver at all times 2)100% need to drill rod holders into the kayak, I personally have 3 rod holders, 1 in front and 2 in back 3)Extra paddle 4)head lamp, better to be safe than sorry.. 5)no larger that a 7ft rod. 6)Pliers to unhook the fish 7) gaff for that big bass.
If you have been kayaking for 5 years, you will pick this up real quick.. Its better than fishing from shore... When you get more advanced, I'll throw you some links on how to insall a fish finder which is pretty cool.
email me with any questions...

Find a rock pile and troll a tube and worm by it, you'll catch quite a few fish.

That X-Factor is a rock!! How's it paddle?Lefty
I've been fishing alot from a kayak for several years. It's the best. The versatility and the diversity of places one can fish is terrific. I've fished all kinds of environments from hiking in with a kayak on a cart to remote lakes and rivers to fishing blue water and catching tropical species like dorado, tuna and billfish. I just returned from the Turks & Caicos Islands in the Carribean where I was using a kayak to catch bonefish. It was great. You won't regret it but make sure you get set up right.

Yeah, but we got skunked. Who would imagine that you could actually get skunked fishing stripers from a yak.
didn't know it could happen... --124-3
