Wild Bill

Simon and I traveled to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel VA Sun night. A guide friend said the big fish started to get plentiful on Sunday after a long lull. Monday was great with footballs at the bridge and gannets and big boys out from the bridge. It is always an amazing sight to see birds dive bombing by the hundreds. The total flock may have been well over a thousand birds.
Fly fishing was not too practical with these fish. It was truly run and gun. Everything was moving pretty fast. Once in a while you would see a big fish roll.
Monday was our best day on big fish. We caught some real heavy weights. Simon had the prize with the very fat 43" fish weighing over 40 pounds. It was caught on a 6" Wildeye. The best I could do was 38".
Tuesday was to be N 15-20 kts with gusts to 25, waves 4'. It did not look bad at all at the launch. We traveled to the bridge and it was actually calmer than Monday. We only saw one other boat--my guide friend Capt Pete. As the day progressed, the weathermen gave us all he promised and a little more with 25 kts and fives. We ducked behind the fourth island and had lunch. The gannets flew off and we could not find them again.
Called Pete about noon to tell him we were heading in because things were getting pretty rough. He was already at the launch loading his boat on the trailer. They had their fish and one client was getting a little green. The ride back in Simon's Seacraft was sporty but safe.
Wed the air temp dropped 17 degrees to 23. There were the footballs in the mid 20's available at the pilings but we spent most of the day looking for the gannets and bigger fish. Found a huge flock of birds dive bombing, but there were no big fish under them and the birds quickly flew off. Other then the small fish at the bridge, we did not do anything. I assume the drastic temp drop affected the fish.
We had two great fishing days and one flat one. All fish returned to be caught another day. Simon and I had a great time, wind, waves, cold and all.
Planning to go back this Sun if the weather cooperates.
