I'm trying to get all my travel tackle together in some kind of organized manner. Currently I have several rod & reel tube combos and it is awkward carrying everything when traveling. I am also worried about them counting three rod tubes as extra baggage (assuming they even let you carry the reels on). I was thinking about buying two double rod & reel tubes, but that's not much better. I used to carry all my rods in a large PVC type carrier, but you have to check those and I would rather carry on my rod and reels, if possible. So, what does everyone else use to carry, say three rods with them?

I have an Abel Expedition rod carrier. On a recent trip I was able (no pun intended) to carry the following rods:

5 piece 8wt
3 piece 9wt
3 piece 10wt
3 piece 11wt
4 piece 12wt
3 piece 13wt
3 piece 15wt

I probably could've carried one or two more rods. The dimensions are 3.5" x 7" x 42" - this is designed for 3-piece rods and I know they make one for 4-piece and 5-piece rods. Fit in the overhead comparment except for puddle jumper prop jobs in which case I checked just prior to boarding.

P.S. Be careful about carrying-on your reels. I've read stories about security demanding that the fly line and backing be stripped off before continuing through security.

I make my own rod tubes out of PVC pipe. The 3" pipe will fit three fly rods. I cut the tube to length and use two end caps to seal it shut. One cap is stuffed with foam then glued on. I place the other end cap on, drill a hole through the cap and pipe then screw in an allen screw to lock it shut. In the past the only hassle was that tools, even an allen wrench, were not allowed to be carried on the plane. With the new relaxed rules they won't take any more of my allen wrenches. If you attach a strap to the tube it becomes a personal item. As for reels I almost always carry them on. I have never seen/heard of anyone being asked to remove line from a reel.

I fly back and forth from NE to Florida at least twice each year. I have two rod carriers that each hold two 4 pc.rods. I tape them together with Electricians tape and have never been questioned about carrying them on board or had them called (2) carryons. I carry my reels in a carryon bag and have never had any trouble with them either.

After a few unpleasant experiences, security control not allowing me to carry travel rods, reels and flies onboard (after checkin approved them!), I have come to the conclusion that the best is to check in all your fishing gear with the rest of the luggage in a soft bag long enough to accomodate the rods. One piece of luggage only to worry about...

If you are flying domestically another option is to Fedex all of your gear to your destination prior to your trip. That way you know everything is there. Use your judgement internationally.
