Well, ****ed the family off by fishing Christmas , so I might as well get em' again on New Years Eve! :brow Just hope the new moon tides don't shut them down, when the water is this cold the stripers won't exert a lot of enegy to chase down a lure. Doesn't anyone else still fish or are you all "Fair Weather guys" ?

Does anyone know the facts? While returning from a less than productive black fishing trip last week we found Birds & Bass working well off the Rockaway’s at the head of Ambrose Channel. Fished approx. an hour pretty good bite (it never stopped).
All Fish were 16 -22 inches few bigger
Was later told these fish were protected by DEP regulations that prohibit catch & release if fish are migrating & beyond 3 mile limit?

It is true that there is no fishing beyond the 3 mile limit.(otherwise known as the EEZ) Migration is subjective and not pertinent as there is no way to prove this per say. They have allot of problems down south because they get big runs about 12 miles east of Cape May and allot of poachers. This may change as the NMFS is thinking of opening this area back up to commerical (and thus Recreational) fishing since they say the Bass are at an all time high (#$119)

Glad to see your still getting them Itsmoderating!!!!! I was alway led to believe if you are catch and releasing them no one can bother you! Or you just say you are trying for bluefish / whiting and you keep catching stripers :brow ! That would be such a SIN if they open it up to commercial. Can't we have one fish for recreation?? At one point they were gonna close striper fishing altogether a year ago, now there is this so-called abundance? (#$119) Why does the honest guy have to suffer cause of poachers? Check out this poacher in this attached picture. I don't know the story behind it, for all I know he saw a large fish kill and scooped em up. ( Highly doubtful though )

Instead of a "Ducks Unlimited" sticker on the back of his cab window the .... should have a "Stripers Unlimited" in its place.... --126-3-

I've seen trucks liked that filled with stripers and blues off the beaches of East Hampton on several occasions over the past few years, usually late fall/early winter. They launch dorys from the beach to release a huge net, then crank it back in with an electric motor on the back of a pickup truck. First time I saw it I called the East Hampton police to find out if it was legal. (Was told that it was). Apparently the technique (haul seining or gil netting--not sure of the difference) goes back generations and efforts to restrict its practice invariably raise heated debate between fishermen and environmentalists and the commercial baymen. I can understand the right of commercial fisherman to make a living, but it is pretty disheartening to see the catch first-hand.

True, true.
Legal harvesting is a functioning part of the business.
Illegal harvesting is also a functioning part of the business.

I saw this photo on another site and there someone said that it was not a poacher, but a commercial fisherman who caught his whole season of fish in one night!

Hard to believe that it was a legit catch.
I saw the haul seining technique with Dory boats in Jeff Manicini's striper video. He mentions that this technique is no longer permitted.
I'm not up to date on the regulations. I just think that poaching needs to be squelched.
There's a chapter on the dory-netting technique on the beaches of the east of of LI in Peter Kaminsky's book, "A Moon Pulled up an Acre of Bass." No mention there of it being illegal, and I doubt he would've written about participating in it and named names if it was.
It is pretty disturbing to see the results, though. Most of us won't catch that many large bass in a lifetime. Some of us are concerned that our kids might not catch any.

Damn! That’s a serious pile of fish… With all of the sand on them, I assume they were netted right off the beach. Sad way for a striper to die. I thought this was banned years ago...

Here's a bit of info about illegal, and legal harvesting in NY State.
This is an old article from the Voice, but still relevant.

Yes the picture was from another web site! A fishing friend of mine Emailed it to me to see, so I just passed it along. I too don't like to stop anyone from making a living, but when your living messes with MY FISHING it stops there lol. Not to mention the whole economic chain of events "ie" tackle shops, boats, marinas etc.... I say get another job! Any of us could go out and do the same thing. I understand grandfather clause, but times change! I could go on for ever, such as the shad netters in the hudson, that kill TONS of stipers to net some usless fowl tasting shad, under grandfather laws. Then it becomes a problem as what do do with the by- catch , which is worth way more than the target catch. Well tommorrow at this time, hopefully I'll be catching and releasing stripers!!! --127-3-

Recently read story of a poacher who when caught claimed he needed the money his cash take from just short & out of season Bass was in excess of $30,000 a year. Hard to believe but black market bass get 2.50-3.00 per pound. Big money. I guess some do to supplement there income others out of sheer greed.
While I was fishing in Gloucester area, three men were arrested & jailed for poaching (two anglers & the owner of a fish market). They were under surveillance for weeks & video taped before their arrest.
Over the past, few years I have only heard of a couple other poachers who were caught any actual faced jail time or large fines. One in Long Island Sound other from Sandy Hook Area Both had there boats/van confiscated & received large fines of up to $ 250 dollars per fish.
