It looks like it's time for Dick's to start clearing out fishing tackle! Their rod and reel prices are too high for me normally, but their annual winter clearance is going on right now. In my experience they'll keep putting out fresh batches of tackle in the clearance section in the next couple of weeks. Last year they also had 1/2 of their Rapalas on sale for $1-$2 off for a while, with one week at an additional 25% off all of them, including the ones already on sale.
Today the one near me had a couple of Reddington fly reels, a couple of very nice casting reels, and a bunch of spinning reels, all at 1/2 or even 2/3 off normal prices, then discounted 25% off that! They also had a few nice rods. There were two St Croix 4-8 lb rods, one a 6' one piece and the other a 6'6" two piece. The first one was marked as $64.97 then another 25% off that, and the second was marked as $34.97 with another 25% off! I couldn't pass up that deal, especially since I was looking for another largemouth bass rod. Apparently that price was a mistake though since it rang up as $48, but I complained to the cashier and he said he'd give me the rod for the marked price. I said I'll take it! :D I probably would have still taken it at the $48 price.

Funny you should mention that. I just stopped by my local one today and noticed they had Braid Slammers for <2 bucks a pop. Cleaned them out in the 1 oz and 3/4 oz sizes....

Ok well now the bad news. I just noticed that the rod blank of the "deal" I picked up is cracked! :(
Now I have to figure out what to do: Take it back to Dick's for a refund or send it to St Croix to get fixed. Even with paying for shipping back to St Croix it's probably a good deal to keep the rod...
I was going to post about this also, I was out last night and ended up picking up two St. Croix rods from Dick's for short money. I got the 6'6" rod you mentioned and a 7' casting rod. These would be the 3rd and 4th rods I picked up since the end of the season. The good thing is my wife was with me so I did not need to sneak them in or do the walk of shame after she caught me bringing them in.
My wife is now encouraging me to pick up a few rod racks to get organized.

The guy at the fish desk was shocked himself when his fancy little gun zapped the St Croix rods at around half price....it was like I had insider information because they weren't marked and he was clueless.....I got a 7 foot spinning rod.....sweet deal.........but how did you get what appeared to be an extra 25 % off? I don't think I got that.....one more thing.....can you remember what type casting reels were on sale?? I had the guy going around and zapping all sorts of stuff.....Sped

I go to the Dick's in N. Attleboro, and they just put their clearance stuff on a table in the center of the fishing area. There was a sign on the table that said "25% off all clearance items. Discount off ticketed price." or something like that. From past experience, they only put this sign out occassionally on the clearance stuff, just like the 25% off Rapala sale only happens for a week.
I don't remember the casting reels on sale, sorry! They were probably freshwater reels for 12-18 lb line or something like that and the original price was $125, with 50% off or so. They may have been Pinnacle... or Okuma? Not sure, sorry!

At the Blackstone Valley (Millbury, MA) Dicks, the items ending with .97 in their cost were just mixed amongst other merchandise. You really have to fish around to find your deals there. Incidently, they didn't have any more St Croix rods.

UPDATE: Well, I went back to the store and checked the regular price rod racks to see if they might have teh same model on display, which I figured was a 1 in a 1000 shot. They had it! I just swapped the rod with the broken one I had and was out the door again in under 5 minutes (after going through the clearance stuff again of course).
The stuff is no longer 25% extra off, just as I figured. That only lasts for a limited time.
I went to the store in natick last Friday. They didn't have a single thing. Not even a bobber!!!
St Croix will replace the rod. They will ask you to send it to them "for replacement". Most if not all the major rod companies will replace a broken rod. Send them an e-mail and your all set.

The sad part is that before they started this big national growth, they were actually pretty good. But alas, I know of another chain that followed that same root and they suck as well....The Sports Authority

The fishing department in the North Attleboro store is pretty decent during the season. The selection of plugs and plastics is surprisingly good, but they are lacking in reel and stainless hook selections.
In general, I like the store but I wish they'd get rid of the annoying fishing department guy who positively WILL NOT shut up. He's the greatest fisherman in the world, I know... he told me so.
