Yesterday, when I was in Concord Outfitters, I saw an Orvis product called no memory running line. Does anyone have experience with this stuff, especially as a running line for a shooting head system? It was actually very cheap (I think less than 5$ and I generally do follow the ol' adage of 'you get what you pay for'). Worth further looking into????
Thanks

I may have used that running line before.

Or, maybe not.

I forget.

So in other words...it works. What were we talking about????

If you're talking about a mono running line to be used with shooting heads the product that you want is called Amnesia.... I don't know if it's still available on the market but it's the best I've ever used. Although it coils up like any mono, simple stretching by hand straightens it right out. I wouldn't use any smaller than 30lb, though. Even 30 is a bit tough to set a hook with-- your hand tends to slip on the stuff when it's wet...

I have to say I'm not a huge fan of Amnesia as a shooting line with heads (although I hesitate to disagree with Bob LeMay!)...I find it too slick and hard to grip for hauling and setting and that it coils like crazy and needs a lot of thorough stretching. That said, it does shoot like a rocket since it's so stiff and slick.

Orvis used to have a shooting line I really liked that was very fine but still didn't knot up much...can't remember what it was called.

My perspective on shooting lines is that it really depends on the application...if you need to make really long casts and get down deep fast, then diameter really matters and you have to suffer some of the downsides of fine line that handles poorly. But if distance and rapid descent are not that important, I'd go with something a little beefier that handles better. There is nothing more annoying than dealing with line coils and tangles over and over...is 5-10 feet of extra distance really that crucial? (inj some applications it is). Also, I recommend a little water in the bottom of whatever you are stripping into...will help a lot with coils.

Josh, you're right on the money, the stuff is far from perfect, I just never found anything better. Down here the stuff is manageable since the temperature is much higher. I imagine up north the stuff would be like barbed wire... Although I still have two reels set up with the old super sinking shooter with Amnesia -- the newer sinking head with running line all in one gets a lot more use when we're not working shallow.
