Happy New Year everyone. I have to tell you there is nothing quite like finding tailing bonefish on New Years Eve. Oh yeah, we also had shots at a permit. Once again, the weather dictates what we're going to be doing. The last few days have been awesome- air temps in the 80's, light breezes, little cloud cover and water temps warming back up for some of our favorite flats critters. Earlier last week cold fronts had cooled the water to around 64 at its warmest when the week prior it was getting up to 78 in the late afternoon! As I posted earlier, the Spanish Mackerel bite is still red hot and if you have reasonably calm conditions it's a no brainer. Use your trash flies or a synthetic chartreuse whatever. Spanish aren't known for being picky. They are however, known for some blistering runs. Too much fun for it to be legal. The other bite that has been on fire has been the speckled sea trout. Not to be confused with the 6 inch Brook variety. Out in front of Flamingo the sloughs and ditches on a falling tide are productive. Nothing fancy here- your standard chartreuse clouser is all you need. However, if you haven't fished in front of Flamingo tie on some weedguards. I like 20# Mason. Floating lines work well but an intermediate gets you down through the grass and down to the fish. When the trout are on it can be ridiculous. Until next time.
