Drove to a local lake (Winthrop in Holliston) and was surprised to see people on the ice. Saw a few fisherman and a cross country skier. I haven't been out yet due to busy holiday schedule but wouldn't have thought the ice was ready. Anyone been out lately?

No but I'm itching to. I've been reading about reports of 6-8" of ice in centeral MA as recently as last weekend but with rot and melt in spots. As bad as I need a fix I think that I'll give it another week and catch up on more of the Honey Do's...

Ice, no. But it was forming while I was kayak fishing yesterday morning.

Didn't stop me though. --127-3-

There is hard ice around, but pick your spots well. For example, I would not venture out on Hopkinton Res now, even though I saw several guys fishing one of the coves. 3-4 days ago, there was 50 % open water in the main body of the lake and near inlets. This lake is notoriously slow to freeze over and ice is not uniform because of currents and its depth. It's not worth a dunking or worse, IMHO.

OTOH, the shallower and smaller ponds around here in Central MA are in pretty good shape. Some may require "planking" to get past the thinner edges but have at least 6 inches of uniformly distributed ice once you get past that.

I was just looking at the long range forecast and it looks like the real arctic chill may be coming in next week.

Went out just before christmas and the ice was fine. Did not have a auger so I don't know how thick it was but it was solid as far as I could tell. Verified at least 3" of thickness (digging with a knife).
