I will be in Greece this summer and I need some help. I will be on the island of Ithaki in the Ionian sea and I would like to bring along my St. Croix 8wt. ultra rod. Can someone suggest some flies to try? I know they have sea bass, bream, and snaper. What should I take? What type of line should I use? The island has rocky shores with steep dropoffs down to 300+ feet. I will be doing most of my fishing from shore and along rocky dropoffs by boat. Please try to suggest flies that I can buy since I don't tie. Thanks!

I would like to ad something that may motivate someone to make some suggestions. ;) The reason for my trip is because my parents left me a house on the island and I have to go and make sure all is well since it is sitting vacant. I plan to rent the house to tourists during the high season and hopefuly find out how good the flyfishing is. Anyone interested in a vacation on a Greek island in the Ionian? Help me find some fish and suggest what flies I sould use. This could be a good thing, no? ;)

I can't give you suggestions based upon any practical experience, but you can't go wrong with clousers and decieivers as basic saltwater imitations. Probably relatively small, #4, #2 and #1/0 hooks, for the bait fish I imagine in the Mediteranean. Especially for the game fish and water you describe. More important will be what kind of line you use. It sounds like deep sinking lines from the boat and at least intermediate from shore.

I will be moving to central Europe, Frankfurt, in a couple of months. And a trip to the Greek Isles is definitely in the plans for later this year. Send me some info in a PM, or otherwise, and maybe we can hook up.

I pursued the sea bass in Spain 2 years ago.
They like sea worms and small bait fish. Their mouth is smaller that our striper's. Try small chartreuse and white and all white clousers. Also small deceivers in similar colors. I would not go larger than a 1/0 or smaller than a 4.

If you fish at night go black and purple.I'll show you an example of a good bass fly for night fishing.

An 8 wt and an intermediate line are all you need. You'll also see sea robins and porgy -esque fish there.
