This a pretty basic question. I have not brought a fly rod with me on the plane since pre-9/11 and i was wondering whether there are any restrictions. I have a 3-piece 9wt that I would like to carry on. I can't see how there would be an issue with this but I wanted to check before trying it. thanks for any info.

just returned from Panama with a tube full of 7 rods. have traveled extensively since 9/11 and never even had a question about it. reels either as I had all my reels as carry-on this past trip. they get nervous about hooks and some pliers so I check em.

Like above I've had no trouble traveling with and carrying on rods (3 & 4 piece) and a bag full of reels.

One tip is to go the website for your airline and print their carry baggage restrictions. AA for example has a significant section on sports equipment baggage.

thanks guys. I'll check out the airline's page. I checked out the TSA updated list but it did not mention any fishing equipment.

Jet Blue doesn't have anything on fishing gear, however they do say they don't allow pool cues.

Take a look at continetal's vs deltas...Just got back from Abacos.

Continental 84" max ;)
Delta 62" max or 100$ each way

Makes a difference on who you fly with...

I took American to Abaco

115" max. I took a 7' rod tube with no extra charge

Ray,
Did you take american all the way to MH? from where PVD or BOS? Just curious...I want to go back and would like it to be a little cheaper

I went from BOS to MIA to MH. At the time the only flights to MH were at 9:50 in the morning and I couldn't get into MIA early enough to make the connection so I stayed in MIA over night.

I can't pass up the direct flight from boston to nassau so I am flying Jet Blue. Looks like 62" max for checked baggage, 24" for carry-on.

Hey guys, have you been able to carry on your Boga grips, flies or pliers? I know the TSA rules have changed recently, and they're supposed to allow you to carry on small scissors, etc.

Thanks,

I travel regularly with 3pc rods in an old Sage multi-rod case. I always carry this onboard with me. Never had a problem with it, before or after 9/11. I've taken it to the Bahamas, Norway, different islands in the Caribbean and across the USA. I put it through the x-ray belt, let TSA take their sweet time inspecting it, then off I go. Never been hassled. Same with my reels, although I did get a very suspicious TSA inspector take a hard look at one of my sinking heads...

As for pliers, boga's, knives and hooks: they ALL get checked-through, I never carry this stuff onboard.

Think "security" and you'll be fine.

I carried on three 3 piece rods, two spinning reels, a fly reel, a couple boxes of flies, some spinning tackle, and extra line on a trip to the Bahamas a year ago. I didn't have any issues. I've heard of some people that have had trouble carrying on things though, especially hooks. I guess it depends on the security guy you get.

I've constantly travelled with my fly rods since 9/11 mostly on Jet Blue and no problems, only one carrier gave me an issue and that was Continental. I've flown them and when I ask them if I can carry on rods they flat out told me no, and so I asked them then if the rods were lost as check on, would their $1000 check on replacement policy ($1000 per bag) cover the missing rods and they flat out told me no, it only covers clothing. I asked if they were sure and they said yes, that a customer recently made a claim for lost luggage and they would only cover him for the clothing in this luggage, not the other items lost. My reaction was WTF??? You don't allow me to carry on my rods but if I check them in you won't cover their loss???? They answered yes, that's how it was. I told them it was ridiculous. That was the last time I ever flew Continental.

Anyway, Jet Blue has always been great when it comes to letting me carry on rods and reels. That's why I fly with them 99% of the time in the US.
