I've been wondering about bass and water current. The books say that bass like moving water. I agree with that. But how fast and how turbulent? I would think it would be too much effort for a bass to try and move around alot in fast moving water such as the canal during mid tides. People catch fish in the middle of the canal with jigs when the current is moving pretty good. What about storm driven surf? Is water clarity more of an issue than turbulence in that situation?

What do you think? What do bass do in different water conditions? You guys have a lot more experience than me.

Jim,

Bass like to lie in the eddys formed by structure close to the strong part of the current. This allows them to conserve energy while waiting for the current to bring food to them. They can then make a quick dart to eat, and go back to the calm water.

Try fishing the edges of the fast moving water.

Hope this helps

When I first started fishing for bass I found it hard to beleive big bass could swim and catch bait in fast moving currents. After fishing the canal and the breachways in RI and seeing guys take 40lb fish in ripping currents, mostly outgoing at the breachways, I was a believer that big fish can efficiently stalk prey in fast moving currents. The best spots seem to be where the currents form any kind of rip.
Now most of the spring and fall I fish the fast moving currents of the breachways and have been blessed with good luck.
