View Full Version : flats swap--any interest?

Hey folks,
Headed south in March. Anyone interested in doing a flats swap? If only a half dozen or so are into it, we could do two flies/patters per; more interest, and we could limit it to one (unless people were jazzed about doing/getting multiple patterns).
Let's see what the interest is, and we'll set some parameters.
Cheers,
Matt
Oh, yah--let us know what you're interested in tying. I'll tie some bonefish bitters, and a patter to be named later, if we're doing two.

I'm interested. Would it be limited to just Southern flats? I.e. would a flounder or silverside pattern be okay?

Would you guys be into doing two patterns? It'd be nice to get a dozen. Let's see if we can get two more folks to participate.

I'm good either way, but I wouldn't mind getting two of each pattern. That way I could use one and if it worked well I have the other as a template in the event I lost the first to a big fish...or rock.

I'll jump in on this one. I am good either way. I can do twelve of one pattern or six each of two different. If we do the two patterns I will do one for bones and one for Northeast flats.

I don't have any plans to head south, so if some of you snow birds want to trade the southern patterns for some NE patterns (once the swap is set up) I'm game.

Not sure I can make that tight of a deadline. With mailing times etc... that would only give us a week or so to get them done.

I'm off to Cuba tonight...if this is still going...I might be able to rustle up a dozen or so "ultimat shrimps" to add to the mix after I get back...

I'm moving to Canada Henry, that settles it. National Health and you get to go bonefishing all the time. Can you post a picture of an "ultimate shrimp"?

Never having tied many of those critters, mine will be bonefish clousers anyway, One night and several many Geary's HSAs. Plus- my little foxy clouser has worked at Monomoy and on the Essex River flats quite well. :-%

Ok, seven folks will work. That's 12 flies per. (You don't need to tie your own flies for yourself.) I'll leave it up to individual tiers whether or not you want to tie a dozen of one pattern, or half a dozen each of two.
Sean--we'll work around Titleguy. Everyone can shoot for getting their flies done in the next couple of weeks, and he'll get whatever I've got at the time of his leaving. But lets set an "official" deadline of one month--Feb 21st--for all flies to be in the mail. I can always get him the remainder after he comes back. Again, I'm sure he'd appreciate folks getting right on the stick, but do what you've got to do.
I'll PM folks with a shipping address.
I don't mind re-using the same envelope if you just enclose money for return postage, but I would appreciate it if folks could include a large sticker with a return address on it (the kind that you can, ahem, find at the post office) so I don't have to frig with covering up the old address, etc. Of course, if you just want to include another postage paid envelope inside your shipping envelope, feel free.
It'd also be helpful if you tag your flies with your reel-time name and the name of the fly, so we can PM each other for recipes and tying hints afterwards, etc.
Good luck in Cuba, Henry.

Would anyone object to one more? It would mean 14 flies, instead of 12.

Not a problem

I'm in, but I'm confused.
Are we to tie 14 of the same pattern (I
think), or 7 of two patterns (mentioned in
thread), etc.
For us whose cantelope's been baked by the sun,
we need the assistance of Crayola's. ;)
Thanks,
Uncle 4

Unc--
Either will work. If you choose to do 14 of the same pattern, it simply means that everyone else in the swap will get two of your flies. If you do two patterns (7 each, 14 total), everyone will get one of each of them.

Hi all,
I'm new to the board, and itching to get into a fly swap. Can't wait to have at them this spring. I can do Puglisi style Peanut Butters in chartruse and white. What do you think?
Best Regards,
BillyD

I think you're too late. I would advise you to tie them up, and see if another member ends up dropping out.

Alas...
Probably for the best anyway.
Having trouble locating chartreuse EP Fiber. Called KTP and they claimed to have some. Drove 1 hour to find that they had mislabeled their EP stock. A solid lime green was their chartreuse (#$119) No gamakatsu in either of the 2 sizes I wanted, and the final blow was that they claimed to never have stocked any type of plastic stemmed eyes.
Oh well, the trip yielded me 2 spools of ultra fine tying mono, and and some XH shank fly hooks that I'll use to tie some SBFT offerings.
I'll be tying a dozen of something  this weekend to be ready for the next swap. Keep me in mind.
Best Regards,
BillyD.

Take heart. The last time I was at KTP, I couldn't find 3 ought black thread.
Certainly not a slam on KTP--their selection is not bad. Just how things usually go. If you need it, the place you drive to doesn't have it.

Folks,
I tried to PM everyone with a mailing address, but I'm afraid a few of them kicked back on account of the posting time limit. If you haven't received a PM from me with an address, please shoot me a PM, and I'll get back to you shortly.
Thanks,
Matt

Matt, flies are in the mail to you.
Everyone else: Note, in my recipe I forgot to mention I tied in two pieces of krystal flash on each side of the fly as the last step before applying Softex and/or head cement. It will be obvious when you see the fly, but just in case I thought I'd mention it. FYI, I tied one Joe Brooks Blonde and one Joe Brooks Blonde with eyes for each participant. I was going to tie a set of flounder flies but since many of you are heading south I thought a small unweighted baitfish imitation would be more appropriate.
Good luck.

Scott,
I got yours the other day. Thanks.
I'm still waiting on a couple of sets, and am leaving for LI tomorrow, so I won't be able to sort and send them up until I get back.
Until then,

Flies went out today. We had a few drop outs, so I split the extras up between everyone who contributed. You'll each get the same number of flies you sent.
Thanks to those who participated. They all look great.
