Just got back from Cabo last night and was welcomed by a Noreaster and 12" of fresh snow. I guess vacation is officially over.
In any case, the trip was a blast and as a first timer to Cabo I had a great experience and hope to go back soon.
As far as the fishing . . . Overall, I only got to fish 2 days 1/19 + 1/20--both offshore trips. The 1/19 trip was a bust. No fish and only one strike all day. We trolled up and down, out and about to and fro the Gorda Banks and all up and down the greater cabo area out to 10 miles and back--NADA. Nice $300 boat ride but that's fishing.
Friday, 1/20 was a different story. A 1/2 hr. after leaving the marina, a healthy Dorado struck the long orange/green plug about the 7th wave back. Once landed it was estimated to weight around 16lbs.
After about another two hours of trolling with Land's end slowing sinking into the horizon, we came upon a school of about 300-400 dolphing bustin all over the place. It was the biggest school of spinner dolphins I've ever seen and they were jumping all over the place. Some of the jumping 10ft. out of the water and purposefully slamming their tails as they return to the water. You could smell something fishy in the air and the guide mentioned they were feeding on a school of sardines. Definitely Tuna water!!
The first pass on the outside of the frenzy yielded 4 knockdowns and three hard pulling yellowfin hooked and landed. The biggest was about 20lbs and the smallest about 8-10lbs. The 2nd pass brought three hook ups and landings with all fish in the small football size--approx 10lbs. We stayed on scene for about an hr and a half and watched the dolphin show which played out before us the entire time. We only had another fish here and there and we released 3 other fish in 6lb range and one skipjack. All told we kept the one Dorado and the 20lb yellowfin and gave the crew the rest of the yellowfin. We had a feast fit fit for a king back at our hotel--the Fiesta Americana. Chef Juan kicked @ss and we had the best meal I've had in a long time. Shashimi and pepper seared tuna with blackened and grilled Dorado on the side. Something I will not soon forget.
If you get a chance, look up Capt. Carlos of the Reel Tequila in Cabo San Lucas. He and mate Alejandro worked really hard for us and put us on fish. The 33ft Rampage kept us dry and comfortable all day and made it to and fro the fishing grounds quickly. All in all a perfect day on the water and I cannot wait to get back there soon. Maybe next fall for marlin???
