Cabela's and Bass Pro in the same neighborhood!!!!!
It will be great......but I'll make most of my purchases at my favorite small shops.

So far Cabelas has been rummored to be looking at sites in Maine, NH and now MA. I would be very surprised if the end up in the Peoples Republic. ;)

MA has a greater population, and it would also draw people from the town of Rhode Island. If Cabelas opened in Plainville, it would mean the end of trips to KTP or Beans.

heres whats good about it. often the local shops selection of rods is limited, and they dont have the rod you want to check ouyt before you buy it, so you order it blind over the interent, and maybe its what you expected, maybe not. Now you will be able to go to cabellas and bass pro, check out the large selection of rods, find the one you want, check it out in person, then have your favorite local shop order it for you!
also, I like to shop local too, but sometimes the local shops selection of lures etc just isnt big enough. at least bass pro and cabellas will be a place to pick up those items the local guys dont have.

GREAT POINT!! You can touch it and then order it from the local guy plus you can now negotiate...WOO HOO!!!
It would be cool to see some of the local plug dealers selling their plugs at BPS or cabelas.
Alll I know is that I will be there opening day!!

Good news, now I can get my Kevin Van Dam autographed spinnerbait for when the bucketmouths are really in lockjaw mode! But then again, Skyler, the 14 year old fishing department manager probably wont be able to dial me into a hot tuna bite....
Cool places to visit, kind of the Jordan's of the fishing world. I'll still spend all my cash at first light though.

SK,
All good points, but does First Light carry these babies????

You never know when fishing will suck so bad that you'll have to throw it into Margarita-mode to save the day... ;)

My wife will want to move. I live less than 1 mile from the stadium. If anyone has been in either of those stores, they will tell you that they are a great experience.

I do order online from the megastores occasionally - like when I can't find Yozuri hydrometals or megabaits. I've been to KTP, LL Bean, etc. It's neat to go someplace where you can get the whole thing from soup to nuts, but I don't enjoy spending any kind of time in those places. They're crowded and go on forever. I'll choose my local fly shop over the Walmart-of-fishing stores any day. The owner of my local fly shop knows me, knows how I fish, how I tie, etc. He'll give me an hour of conversation without trying to sell me a single hook.

I think ProBass shopps,Redhead and Off shore angler are all owned by Cabela's?
I look forward to it,it's going to offer alot more than just fishing stuff :brow
Nothing like local knowledge form local pros. I think they are on page 52 of the new cabellas catalouge. It will be a fun store to visit once a year, but who would you rather support the Kraft family empire or guys like Derek and Nat who actually turn the key to their shops door everyday?

I live 7 minutes from BassPro and 20 minutes from my favorite local shop. I almost always travel the extra 13 minutes to my local shop because what Basspro really ends up to be is 4 acres of sh*t and a verypoor selection fo the stuff I really need. I am not talking exotic rigged stiff I mean like ten racks of shirts that no human should ever wear and no 5/0 short shank live bait hooks.
Shop local they have the stuff you need and the knowledge to make it work.

Bass Pro and Cabela's are competitors, each vying for market share in the changing offline/non-catalog retail world we now live in, where saving a penny is more important than supporting the little guy. Bass Pro Shops may own offshore angler, I think they do. Also playing the retail field would be Gander Mtn., Sierra Trading Post and Sportsmen's Warehouse, and (Dicks-smaller fishing impact). All fighting hard for territory and market share. One or more coming to a town near you within the next 10 years. Cabela's has been putting full size fly shops with experienced clerks, in their mega stores.

So far they are reporting they have agrements for land in E. Hartford, Ct and Hooksett, NH. Now Foxboro, I think they are casting there bread across the water to see who will give them the sweetest deal, i.e. tax breaks, zoning restrictions. We will see.

Offshore Angler is Bass Pro's salty division.
For what it's worth, I checked out the new Keene NH Dick's up near my family home and was damned impressed with their fishing selection. With the exception of fly gear, I can do pretty much all my lure and gear shopping there. I don't think they have higher end rods and not sure if they have Simms...but still a place where I can spend a lot of dough. Which makes sense since they started as a bait and tackle shop. I'll still buy stuff at the Breachway and Weekapaug tackle shops and their ilk but this filled a big hole up near my hometown with plenty of saltwater gear to boot.
