There was an article in Marlin Mag last year about these guys catching billfish (sails mostly) from yaks off Baja, but a lot of people called bulls#$& because these fish are hooked from the motorized boat and then the anglers jump in the yak to fight the fish. Notice that this angler has nothing else in the yak- especially no paddle! Kinda bogus if you ask me.

I just noticed he wasn't wearing PFD. You're right.

But for the potential of taking a bill up the keester....it's making me cringe.

If you don't paddle out to the fishing grounds, land your fish and paddle back without assistance, it isn't kayak fishing.... at least that's how I see it. I think Slappy's story about landing Makos from a Zodiac is more nuts also.

Think about it Sam. How far will a sailfish take you if you hooked up with 1 especially on a fly? Most likely to far to make it back to civilization.

I know Jim Sammons runs a few kayak fishing trips a year in Baja for sailfish, dorado and whatever else is biting. They get taken out on a boat with kayaks in tow to the prime fishing grounds. Once they get there they then get off the boat and onto there kayaks and paddle around searching for sails, dorado and everything else. The boat stays with the group and usually starts chumming up fish and watching for any signs of sailfish in the area. If 1 of the kayakers hooks into a sailfish the boat will stay with that kayaker usually filming the event. Check out Jim Sammons site for yourself.

I might try going on 1 of these trips soon.

Not saying that it still wouldn't be fun. It's just that I don't see it as kayak fishing if there are motors involved. Granted I am out of yak shape now but back in the day I was putting in 30-40 mile days and hauling 20# of block ice. If it's worth catching, it's worth working for.
