Anyone know if this fly is tied "keys style" with the hackles flared outwards or is it "praying hands style" like a deciever?
(I think it's deceiver style but want to make sure)
Can't seem to find a picture that makes it clear...

I just delivered a dozen of that pattern to a local shop. I do it with the tail "Deceiver style", the body is doubled sparkle braid and the collar is squirrrel... I rarely get a request for that pattern any more for big fish. The ones that I tie are on 1/0 34007's for small fish. Good luck.

Hi Capt.
Thanks for the info. Any chnace you can post a pic of a finished fly and maybe one before you put the collar on?
I just tied one up and it came out pretty nice for a first try. I used a 1/0 TMC 600sp hook and can't figure out how you had room to wrap braid for a body...I tied the hackles at the end of the bend, a little flash, grey squirrel collar, and then an orange head and down 2/3rds of the shank. I'll post a pic when the epoxy dries.
A longer hook would allow for bodi braid but does it detract from the pattern shape? I also read somewhere that Stu used to tie a small ball of chenille in front of the feathers and then tie in his collar directly in front of the chenille so that the Collar flared a little bit and did not lay so flat against the "tail"...
I also tied this "Keys Style and it looks pretty good too...needs some tweaking with a bit of marabou or rabbit to make it move a bit more in the current and on the retrieve.

Picture #1: Apte II on a 1/0 Tiemco 600SP hook
Picture 2: Tied Keys Style with flared hackles and variation on the head.
Picture 3: Top View of #2
Picture 4: Rear view of #2.
Notice the small bump of Chartruese chenille.
You can see how this makes the squirrel flare in picture #2.
Picture 5: Apte II variation (think redfish or snook in murky water)
Pictures 2-5 are Tied on a 3/0 Mustad S70D Hook
All (constructive) comments appreciated...

All of the bugs pictured will catch fish. The second photo is probably closest to what I'm doing. I'll try to work up some photos and post them.

I'll bet it would make a great lobster pattern here in the NE.
It has all the colors and the basic shape. Nice looking fly!
