I have been experimenting with this material for about the last month. I think it is some of the best material going for sand eel patterns. My question is, has anyone been able to get a passable peanut bunker out of it?. Any suggestions would be appreciated

Two options.. one is to mix it with another synthetic, like Kinky Fiber to give it some bulk. The other is to tie it in big clumps and trim, kind of like the EP stuff.. the latter method wastes a lot of material if you arent careful.

Do a google search on "DNA Bushpig Fly" to see some examples of a DNA PB fly. The second result should be helpful... lots of pics and links to step-by-steps.

Good luck, and post pics of your results if you come up with something that looks good!

Steve Farrar has some nice peanut bunker flies on the ASWF site, tied solely with DNA. Illustrated tying instructions too.

It's makes nice peanuts and other baitfish. It maintains its bulk well and is becoming one of my favorite materials.

Google DNA flies. You'll get lots of ideas. Like this one - alpineangler

I had this one up on another board. 100% DNA Holofusion, about all I tie with now, 6 colors, Polar on the bottom, pink then lavender topped with gold and a smoke topping and red gills. The bass and sbft thought this was just dandy last season. The pic dosen`t really do the fly justice.

slinger,

That is a beautiful fly! :brow If you'd care to share any tying tips, I'd love to know as well.

Thank you! The hook is a 3/0 Mustad Signature. need the big hook to preserve some gape. The Polar is tied on the bottom and then reverse tied even with the bend. Then a pastel pink layer covers the shank on top with a layer of lavender over that. A viel of gold goes over the top half, enough to give gold highlites but not hide the pink and lavender. Then back to the bottom for one more short clump of polar to finish off the peanut shape and then top off with a thin stripe of smoke and add gills. Coat front half with Softex or Softbody to prevent fouling, not too much just enough to hold the shape. Goop on large domed eyes. You may want to clip any stray fibers to get better shape.

I've used the stuff to tie PB flies. I start with a Gamakatsu live bait hook, acts as a keel, then high tie the material in. Works great and the material has nice flash in the water.

Today's storm gave me a good excuse to hunker down in the cellar and do some tying. Here's a peanut bunker I tied based on Steve Farrar's recipe. The only thing I changed was that I used a foldback technique instead of tying each layer in separately.

I tied this with a single color of DNA. Next time I'll try it with other colors on the back and belly.

Easy tie, you could crank out a whole school of these peanuts in an hour.

Just to set the record straight and avoid confusion that leads to people making the wrong purchase. There are 4 kinds of DNA material. 1st is the Chromozone, which is just flash. 2nd is the powder finish which is very dull and has no sheen to it. 3rd is the frosty fish finish, which has a lusterous sheen and great action in the water, it was my favorite until 4th, is the Holofusion, a blend of 1 and 2. It comes in a profusion of colors with new ones being added continuously. I`ve completely switched over all my tying to this material and swear by it. I`ve gone thruogh 2 or 3 hundred packs in the last few seasons and have probably a hunderd packs on hand at the bench now, I use it for everything from shrimp to some humongious decievers.

Also.... Steve Farrar, a master tier who use lots of DNA patterns will be one of the featured tiers at the Saltwater Edge Fair comming up Sunday at Newport.
