Hello, I want to start by saying what a great forum this is! I am going to Belize the first week in Mar. Flying Delta. I am taking 3 rods in white 3 in. diameter PVC tube that is 43 inches long. Does any one know if I can take this as carry on? I am also planning on taking my reels in a carry on bag. It seems that there is still a lot of confusion as to what is and is'nt allowed. This is my first attempt at trying this. Thanks in advance for any responses. Mike H.

I have carried rod tubes that short without a problem. I usually place them in a closet at the entranceway instead of bringing them to my seat. However, you should be prepared to check the reels. I have had problems carrying them through the TSA people. The problem isn't the reels, but the line on the reels. You won't know if you are going to be able to carry them until after you have checked in and gotten your boarding pass.

Hi there. On all my trips to Belize (BOS-MIA-MZBZ) I've carried
on a rod tube. My tube was only 38"... but I can't believe a
5" longer tube would be any problem.

I also called ahead to the airline (American, I think) and asked
what plane was servicing that route, and how long the over-
head bins were.

You'd be surprised at how accomodating and helpful the toll-
free help people can be.

Oh.... post pix!

Some of the screeners will not let aluminum, or pvc tubes through. They say they could be used as a bat. Remember the screener makes the choice, and I've never seen them give in to an argument. I've never had problems with a covered tube or case ( cordura, or cloth). I've been to Seychelles, multiple trips to Bahamas, and Mexico in the last year.

I fly to florida regularly and usually carry-on my cordura tube that's about 4 feet long. I also carried on my reel with line.

I called the TSA and they said that flies should be checked along with wire leader -- but the last thing they are is consistent...

I wanted to give a report on the trip and thank everyone for their input. I flew Columbia,SC-Atlanta-Belize and back on a CRJ200 and 737 with PVC rod case and reels with line with no problems. In Belize I saw several people with carry on rods in the airport. I checked my flies but a guy I met carried his on without a problem. The fishing was excellent by the way, 2 days bonefishing 12-14 fish released, many more hooked. My first saltwater fly trip.I would definately recomend Belize for a beginner to get many many shots at bones. Thanks again, Michael Huggins
