I'm off to the inlaws for the weekend. Only recently did I realize that they live 2-3 minutes from some of the best trout areas on the Farmington. I've done very little trout fishing before (Once on a friend's parents farm pond, and once on a guided trip in Brittish Columbia). I have no trout gear.

All this being said, what type of spinning tackle could I use to catch trout in the farmington. The wife will flip if I come home with a 5 wt. as I'm currently in a fishing gear moratorium. However, I do have a little ultra lite setup. Little spoons and the like?

I have an idea of how to catch them, I know where to go, and I have the ultra lite setup, but what do I use?

Thanks for all of your help in making this and many future trips to the in-laws far more tolerable.

You may want to check the regs first, most good trout waters are flyfishing only...

Never fished there, just a thought...

BTW: if spinfishing is allowed, you can't go wrong with an 1/8th ounce white Roostertail with a silver blade. Slays them up on the White. Ultralight rod with 4lb test.

There is NO flyfishing-only water on the Farmington. This includes the C/R section. Much of the river is open year-round (check regs to see what is open).

I am a FFer, but see others on the river with spin tackle. With water cold and high as it is, if you are spin fishing the most productive way to catch fish now is with small garden worms (good) or meal worms (=maggots -- best bait). Use a small barbless hook (12-16) and adjust non-toxic shot to let the bait bump along the bottom.

Feel free to email or PM me if you want any more specifics.
