Fished this past Sunday morning with my 5 yr. old son in the Lagoons around San Juan Airport. Booked an early AM charter with Capt. Karim Chaar of Puerto Rico Magic Tarpon.
Finished the day with Two Tarpon to just over 20 lbs. on 8 lb. test fishing live bait. I understand the fish this time of year are a bit finicky and are hard to take on a fly. Did cast a 10wt. to some rises to no avail but my goal was to get fish on the line with my son on board. We had one other run off that we missed when the hook popped. Radio chatter found we had the best morning of the three or four charters out there that day.
First time fishing with Magic Tarpon and I will book again when back in PR. Karim had plenty of patience with my son who's pretty good on board. The bait and wait thing tested his patience as he's use to casting lures with me for blues and bass during the season.
The lagoon area was better than I've read on this forum as well as others. We saw plenty of bird life, iguanas and such. The water looked pretty clean other than some debris floating in on the incoming tide under the overpasses. Will book again in the future. FYI: http://www.puertoricomagictarpon.com Will post pictures once developed.
Next on the docket: Connetquot Trout then Stripers...it won't be long.
