One of the tying skills I have so far been unable to master is palmering marabou. I was hoping someone could offer some pointers or knew of an online tutorial. I would greatly appreciate any help or suggestions

Thanks in advance

as you palmer....keep pushing/directing the fibers toward the hook bend. Try not to wrap over the previous fibers.
Moistening the marabou helps to control it also.
This is especially critical in tying salmon flies like the "alaskabou" that is entirely palmered marabou.
Good Luck.

Tie in your thread down the shank of the hook as usual.
Then tie in the tip of the Marabou feather. Palmer the feather forward pulling the feather back to the hook bend with your fingers, as Jim said.
I don't wet the fibers.
To secure the palmering, run the thread forward through plamered feather, try not to catch the fibers under the thread only the stem. You don't have to compact the palmering as it will fill in the gaps with over lapping fibers.

Don't get discouraged it takes some practice. --125-3

Good advice above but you may cause problems if you wet the maribou. I tie in the end of the blood, have a fan turning slowly toward the eye of the fly while I palmer it. Of course, you have to cover anything loose and light or you will have your materials all over the other side of the room. One of the folks I used to fish the Margaree with taught me that trick.

Jack explains it very well
And the soft hackle is a great fly

Just curious, but when you see marabou collars on so many of the tarpon flies, is this how these marabou collars are attached? Are they palmered as described above? Or, are they tied on in bunches -- top, sides and bottom?

Thanks,

John

The best thing you can do for palmering marobou, or any feather for that matter is to moisten with a little spit and fold it. Try tying in buy the tip with the natural curve of the feather facing the rear of the fly. Grasp the stem, moisten your fingers with a little spit and stroke the fibres from both sides of the stem rearward, pulling them all together, now all your fibres are facing backward, as you wind keep pulling the fibres to the rear and dont overlap. Makes for a beautiful neat job.
