Saturday I had the pleasure of fishing with Uncle 4 in Norman’s Cay – part of the Exuma cays. As an aside, over the past couple of years, I have met and fished with many Reel-Timers and found you all to be not only excellent anglers but really fine people. A good group of good people.
I digress. Off to Norman’s Cay about 8am after meeting up in Nassau on a glorious morning, we buzz the flats of Norman’s to try to figure reasonable access. We gear up and begin an assault on a flat neither of us has fished before. Perhaps anticipation leads to a faulty decision but, before we know it, we’re in chest deep water trying to make a quick cut. It’s hard to cast when a lot more of you is underwater than above it.
Back to the trail and heading in the right direction we break into the flats area (Google Earth – 24 36’49.79” N, 76 48’48.52”W). Looks good. Then I spot another angler, then two, then four. It’s a convention! We wander as they leave the area and then explore up into the mangroves. Multiple schools of fish lead to a couple of hours of hookups, spit outs, bust offs, operator errors, frayed tippets, slips and a pretty 3 lb’er. I’ve never seen someone cast like Uncle 4. I bet he could cast to stripers from Andros.
A walk back to meet up with local knowledge at Macduffs (sort of open now, license soon come) and a cool one. Back to Nassau by 3 pm to multiple ibuprofen and martinis.
Thanks to Uncle 4 for a great day – can’t wait till next time. Pics are Norman’s coming in, gaggle of people fishing our spot, Uncle 4 at Norman’s with the taxi.
