I was given some big black feathers which would be great for palmering, so this is a fly I used them on.

P.S. thanks for the feathers JOHN!

Flat-wings were designed as presentation flies, meaning you let the current do the work. Fish them on a floating line dead drifted, wet fly or greased line swing and you will see just how deadly they can be. They are not ment to be cast and stripped really fast. If you are fishing areas without current probably not your best choice.

That fly looks tight! How long are they? I have been working on a few simillar patterns myself with hopes that I can fool a cow that they are real. Do you or anyone else have any good night-time success stories/techniques with this type of the fly? I am hoping this will help overcome my live eel addiction....

As far as lenght you are only limited by the saddles you have, This fly works in any length, I Like them 12 to 14 inches, but the feathers have to be wide also. On any given saddle I probable only get enough feathers of that lenght that are also wide enough for two or three flies tops. really long and really skinny doesn't work for this fly. Fish it slooow and hang on.
