I just picked up a new Penn 4500SG. Sweet Reel. I am using it on a 7' Crowder MH spinning rod to cast light plastics and plugs for bass (from a boat) So my question is, "What should I spool it with?". I have always used 10lb Berklee Big Game but every year I loose a couple big fish to broken line. I have landed fish up to 40" on the 10lb setup. If I use heavier mono I sacrafice catability. Should I switch to braid? If so, what size? Is there another brand of mono that casts better than Berklee Big Game? Looking for suggestions.
For that size combo I use 20 lb Stealth or Stren Super braid, 14 lb Fireline is also pretty good.

definately go to braided line. I used to have the same problems with lite mono, but the braid solves it. you wont loose castability when the braid is 20 lb test thats the diameter of 4 lb mono! and it holds up well if a fish takes you into rocks that would slice the mono.

Be aware that there are some 'growing pains' with getting used to braided lines. However, with that said, I echo the sentiments of the last two posters. Once you're used to it, you'll never go back.
