I'm sorta new to saltwater fly fishing and tying. I am planning on doing some sight fishing at the Monomoy Island flats in Chatman this season. Wanted to know if anyone could share what flys they use there and how to tie them. Any info would be appricated, thanks

Brian

Follow the last link above to Popovic's Surf Candy. It's a little advanced if you're new to tying, but learning is half the fun.

Personal notes on tying these:

1. Do not skip the mylar underbody on the hook shank, it makes a huge difference by producing a belly sac that is amplified when the epoxy goes on.

2. I've done particularly well in that area with rust and copper colored flash in the pattern - not sure why...

3. Follow Bob's directions and make sure you epoxy these flies in TWO steps, not just one big blob of epoxy. The first coat forms the "skeleton" for the second coat. It makes a big difference so be patient and use two coats.

If I can wrap up my work tonight I'll try to post a couple pics...

Have fun out there, and bring a HH GPS if you don't know the area well. Once the fog rolls in, things go south fast...

My most successful Sandeel imitation for Monomoy and Brewster Flats by far has been the 5-Feather Flatwing, as designed by Ken Abrahams. Also, small white Clousers work well too.

I strongly encourage you to go out there with someone who knows the area. It may look nice and inviting, but a Chuck mentioned, can become dangerous very quickly.

If you can book a day with Randy Jones take it. He's forgotten more about the area than most of us know.

Do some searches on this site for Monomoy Clave and you should find lots of info.

You might want to try the 5-Feather Flatwing by J. Kenny Abrams. Check it out at stripermoon. But, heed Ray's advice, above, if you have never been out there.

oh i plan on it, gonna try and book a chater the first couple of times, or hook up with some people who know the area. cause if it can happen, it'll happen to me. they're thinking of renaming Murphy's Law to Brian"s law!!!!

Thanks for the advice to you and Ray, it diidn't fall on deaf ears

You may find it difficult to get detailed information on the exact flies that work on Monomoy. You see there is a handfull of folks who have spent a better part of their fishing career figuring our how to catch the finicky Stripers out there.

Small sandeel and crabs.

I don't tie flatwings, but I believe a 5-wing is the same as a 3 wing plus two more feathers. I have attached a local link. If you go back to Ken's sight you'll see "Fly Archive" section which has instructions on a 3 wing. Flat wing flys are more of a style than a specific pattern. Mix and match colors. The flatwings use very thin, high quality feathers and are placed horizontally. This gives them a lot of motion in the water. I'm not sure this is a beginners fly and would probably start with a clouser or Ed Mitchells pattern listed above.

IMHO...8 or 9wt clear intermediate...good polaroid glasses...just add salty water and stripes...
I mostly prefer shades of olive over white to mimic the early season sand lances...
...leave 'em on the dashboard to bleach out and soften the colours.

Amen, Pete... also the super hair sand eel clouser that Juro has used is key.

A long olive over white clouser tied on a #2 hook will cover the majority of your fishing on the flats.

Be sure to make your trip coincide with a mid-day high tide, preferably with no cloud cover and 5-10mph winds from the SW --125-3
