I am getting ready! I am now located about Mid-Hudson, (I have been steadily moving up river, Now I am near Poughkeepsie, this is my LAST time moving FOREVER!!!)... I am not sure if my 14' Grumman will be ready this year, ($$ is tight)... but I will be no doubt fishing around the area, Probably between here and or in the Roundout, maybe some here know some good wading spots? Send PM, or email, or respond here if you want to meet up. I have no one in the area who fly fishes or that is interested in in it. Let me know!

Hello. I just joined.

I fish pretty much at Breezy Point off the rocks, and occasionally I will
drive to Penfield Reef in CT. I live in Hastings NY and last Spring I tried fly- fishing at Piermont Pier. It was pretty frustrating because there was alot of debris in the water. I was wondering if you, or anyone else on this board, has fly fished there.

Thank you.

Skeet, I grew up in that area fishing Stripers. Rhinebeck.

I never spent any time in fishing in P town but did fish Kingston, Hydepark, and Rhinecliff a fair amount. Wading is tough for Stripers as they are usually breeding/traveling in the deeper channels with the herring. But, there are plenty of people who get them so go for it.

The easiest way to get access to fishy water is from the railroad tracks. You can drive up and down the tracks from some points. For example, go to the back of the Rhinecliff train station parking lot. Or, on the way into Rhinecliff just before the "Y" into town there is a right hand turn down a hill to a town junction station (for the tracks). Reason I mention these two are because there is a nearby tidal pond/marsh just north of there that feeds into the River. You will probably be joined by a few high school kids downing a couple pops. Just about the entire shore line along this area is fishable and there will probably be others down there here and there. I've never really tried to wade it though, the bottom is very silty and you usually just sink or only gain 4 or 5 ft. Same with the Rondout where it meets the river although I have hear people doing relatively well further up in the creek. Look online for a kayak shop in Woodstock accross the river. They fish the rondout and will know launch/fishing spots better than I do. My guess is they will tell you about Kingston point (near the rondout). Its a public park with a beach and plenty of accessible shore line. You can also creep your way out the rocks form the Strand side of the Rondout waterfront.

You can also get to the shore line easily from Norey Point state park in Staatsburg and Mills Mansion just a bit further north on Rt 9, also in Staatsburg. There is also a small dock at Mills that you can fly cast from. Norrey is large, there are several areas to go. The camp grounds are on the water but the better access is near the boat ramp/marina and the environmental center. Go through the entrance to the center and fish the back padio. You will usually have the place to yourself and it is relatively close to deep water. There are tidal creeks on the way in but honestly don't waste your time there unless you are carp fishing. Easy shore access to fly rodable carp in shallow water. I've seen 10-20lb carp cruising in there consistently. Norrey is kid friendly too when it is open, they have a decent little aquarium and environmental center. Easy bait fishng for pan fish, eels, bullhead, and carp from that padio year round. I've even caught blue crabs there.

There is accesible shore line on the New Palz side by the mid hudson bridge (service roads) as well as by the P town train station. Also on the Marist College and Cullinary campuses. Go down by the Crew docks.

None of the places I am telling you are secrets, its just that there not a ton of people in the area that fish from shore in the hudson. They target stripers from boats in May/early June and then bass fish or trout fish so you will usualy have the place to yourself. I'd throw herring or eel flies and drag bottom.

If you go further north there is also access in Tivoli down by the train tracks and by the Clearmont mansion. But, they are a hike for you coming from P town, an hour or better.
