I am trying to get into fly tying and am wondering if you guys have any ideas about an easy pattern to start up with? I have made contact with a local fly club in Foxboro and am looking forward to learning patterns at their meeting but I am itching to try some over the weekend.
Any suggestions? Thanks, Bob

Clouser minnows and blonde streamer flies in saltwater and wooly buggers in fresh water. Out of these flies, the clouser minnow probably has the highest difficulty level because you have to tie in 'dumbell' weighted eyes. But it's still easy to tie and one of the most essential flies used up here. Good luck

Bobfishgerald,
Try a pattern called "Ray's Fly" (google Ray Bondroew-he also has several other basic but very effective patterns). Tie "Ray's Fly" as a standard bucktail, and also in a Thunder Creek style (google Keith Flusher?). Tie both 2"-5" long. Also a "Sea Biscit" by Chip Gaucher (sp?)

I second the ray's fly, easy to tie and imo one of the best striper patterns ever invented. It was developed to imitate silver sides but tied real skinny it is a good sand eel pattern. A ray's flatwing is a real killer also.

Watch this Lefty's Deceiver (http://www.flyfisherman.com/ftb/lkdeceiver/index.html) and you'll be able to tie exactly like Lefty Kreh.

Bob,
Crossroads Anglers???
I've been a member since day one, and a board member up until this season. It's a great group of guys, you'll learn a lot. PM me offline if you want more info.
Also, stop by the MSBA show in Foxboro and say hi, I'll be tying at my brother's antique plug booth.
