View Full Version : Powerbait....I'm afraid to ask.
I feel so low and dirty........
What's the basic set up for using powerbait in a lake type setting?.... And how far should I whip it? I've been getting skunked while others score at Whalom Lake in Lunenburg....I've been using a sort of Wachusett Resivoir type set up with a egg sinker, and bead above the swivel and an 18 inch 4lb. test leader with a size 14 treble hook with the rainbow powerbait marshmellowy thingys.....and I'm useless.
If it makes people feel better I did throw a hare's ear on an 5wt for 2 hours today....even waded amongst the shopping carts, tires, and beer cans to do it....man, this post makes it seem like I have a few issues.......Sped
Sped,
Back in my power bait days it seemed that some colors of PB out produced others. I would usually carry a jar of every color they made and cycle through until I found the right one (usually pink, purple or chartreuse). Your rig seems OK but I used to use a single hook.
As a side note, in the past few weeks I have been catching a lot of aggressive trout on small chrome/green Kastmasters and Sweedish Pimples.

The rig sounds right. You may want to see what flavor PB the other guys are using. I've heard the hatchery flavored formula (brown color I think) works well and have seen red, green etc. all work.
Make sure the powerbait is floating off the bottom...then add a meal worm.
And DAQ makes a great point lures on early season stockers. Fish one rod on the bottom and toss a lure on a second rod. Brown rooster tails with gold spinners fished slow are deadly.

Hate to admit it but, chartruese powerbait, with a light wire single hook size 12, it has to float off the weedy bottom, egg sinker followed by small split shot then 18'' to the hook. Trick is to cast right at the drop off, where fish usually cruise.

Have you tried rigging it about 18 inches below a white/red bobber and presenting aggressively using a tweety-bird rod and a 6-year-old angler? That's the finest use of Powerbait.... ;)

You sir are the lowest form of human life and if you have two guns you should put them both in your mouth!
Everyone on this board knows that the ONLY way to catch a fish without violating all that is holy is with fly gear that costs two months salary on a fly you tied yourself with organic fibers you grew in your garden or plucked from an animal you tamed using jedi mind tricks and sugar cubes.
For Shame! SHAME!
Also, all fish must be released after loving mouth to mouth resucitation, a full body massage and a garden worm snack for the road.
That being said...try the yellow. ;)

Is this some kind of new fly that I haven't heard of, because I'm amazed that someone would post about that jarred bait on a fly fishing web site.

Yeah, next thing you know, someone will post about feeding french fries to stripers. Oops, forgot, already been done :brow . I think someone came up with a french fry fly pattern at one point. Killer...

I am not a purist. But I fish 99% of the time with a fly rod because I seem to catch more fish this way.
If you're wading out and casting in a pond or lake (non-moving water), use a weighted olive wooley bugger on a sinking line. Let it sink for a while. And then retrieve it in short 4- to 6-inch bursts.
Here's where the purists can castrate me (too late...three sons and the doc's taken care of the snip job). But if I'm looking for scent, I sometimes bring a jar of salmon eggs and dip the fly into the juice for a minute before sending it out (again, more effective in pond and lake fishing than in streams). Can't really say it makes a difference because I am not a fish. But I catch a lot of stocked trout every spring.
Tight lines...

Pumped up worms work once they turn off of the PB. Bit early to find them though. Think bright and flashy for stockers on the fly. They are not use to having to look for their food so it needs to stand out.

1. use a slip sinker
2. leave 18"-24" of leader to the hook
3. Berkly POWER EGGS....The MAGNUM size
4. set out several color patterns (pink/chartruse works for me)
5. test to make sure it floats
6. catch fish

While I'd rather fish with lures or flies, if I were to bait fish for trout, I'd rather use a nightcrawler inflated to hold about 18" off the bottom. I'd also use the lightest weight possible that you feel comfortable to cast any reasonable distance. If they feel the weight, they'll more than likely drop the bait. Small shiners lived lined w/o any float or weight would be a close second choice.
With that said, back in my powerbait days, I had most success with that hatchery formula that came in a brown color. Chartreuse or that orange/chartreuse mix with sprinkles also produced decent but not spectacular results. However, as mentioned earlier, small metals work just fine.
Thanks guys......I'll hit it again today with a few modifications......we shall see......shame, shame, shame on us......Sped

I have no clue about power bait, and if I did I wouldn't admit it anyways...However here are a few of my observations from people that have kicked butt with power bait.
1. It always good to plant your lawn chair as close to the spot where the trout where originally stocked. Don't worry about being to close to other fisherman, remember there are more fish than fisherman!
2. It seems to be helpful to wear a Patriots Starter Footbal jacket.
3. It is VERY GOOD luck to wire a portable tv from your car so you can watch tv in between hits.
4. When you get a nibble let the fish run with the bait for about 10-15 seconds to ensure a clean stomach hook set.
5. When you land the fish, make sure you have towell handy so you don't get fish stuff on your hands. If not just put foot over the fish and rip the hook out. It is helpful to use 40lb test so you don't lose your hook.
6. DRINK A LOT OF BEER AND LAUGH AT ANY JOKER THAT ASKS YOU WHAT THE HATCH IS DOING.

You know what??????? I ride motorcycles too....I bet you have some observations on that as well.
I't asshats like you that take your elitist attitude along with a healthy dose of assumption & set forth to prove to the world just how ignorant you can be.
Maybe I'll make some all inclusive assumptions about fly fishermen based solely on the actions of a few that I have witnessed. That way I too can poison the minds of others based upon misinformation.
Now lets take a look at your essay shall we:
1. It always good to plant your lawn chair as close to the spot where the trout where originally stocked. Don't worry about being to close to other fisherman, remember there are more fish than fisherman!
One could easily misconstrue from this statement that it irritates you that other fishermen crowd you when you fish close to the spot where the trout where originally stocked.
2. It seems to be helpful to wear a Patriots Starter Footbal jacket.
Not sure where you were going with this one......Does your chess club jacket still fit???
3. It is VERY GOOD luck to wire a portable tv from your car so you can watch tv in between hits.
I bet you have a cell phone pocket on your waders!!!
4. When you get a nibble let the fish run with the bait for about 10-15 seconds to ensure a clean stomach hook set.
I'm sure that you "simply" forgot to include that this statement is aimed at those fishing in stocked locations with a put & take policy & in no way intended to indicate that they were harming a catch & release population.
5. When you land the fish, make sure you have towell handy so you don't get fish stuff on your hands. If not just put foot over the fish and rip the hook out. It is helpful to use 40lb test so you don't lose your hook.
See above.
6. DRINK A LOT OF BEER AND LAUGH AT ANY JOKER THAT ASKS YOU WHAT THE HATCH IS DOING.
This one is the "MEAT" of your little ditty is it not?? Clearly you espress your ire & distain for those who choose a different although traditional method of fishing. You could have saved us a lot of time by starting & ending with #6.
What you have done is separated yourself from the TRUE sportsman. Rather than embrace the sport & all forms of it as well as look at those who enjoy it as fellow sportsmen, you choose to demean those that march to a different drummer. Shame on you
