If your buddy has tying skills already, all he really needs is a model - not really instructions or materials lists.

Order some free catalogues.

Dan Baily (Website is good too).
LL Bean FF catalogue.
Orvis
Cableas FF.

etc etc.

I have been tying freshwater flies for 30 years, but saltwater for only the last couple.
If you are planning on tying any bonefish flies then my favourite so far is Dick Browns Bonefish Fly Patterns.
The layout of the book is excellent,it has a colour photo of every fly as well as the full recipe and tying notes and lots of other information relevant to the pattern.
There is even a chapter showing you tying sequences for most of the techniques used.

Have fun!

For an experienced tier, I'd go with Lefty Krey's Saltwater Flies is perfect.

If he's got some tying experience, I'd second the recommendation for Innovative Saltwater Flies .

Like Onshore says, Saltwater Fly Patterns by Lefty Kreh is a good reference book for experience tiers. Very Comprehensive. My only wish would be they include the recipes and correct photos on the same page. Sometimes the material list is a few pages off from the photo sections. What a pain going back and forth.

Another good ref. book is Fly Patterns of Umpqua Feather Merchants. A list of the world's best 1100 flies. Contains list of materials, photo, and originator of each fly.

There's a new book on East Coast Flies coming out this summer. This should contain most of the newer flies we fish in the region.
