I was just looking at Ray's squid flys and it reminded my of a question.

What are the length/size of the squid flys you use/carry?

Mine are about 5-6", but I know I should carry other sizes.

What is the largest you can comfortably cast with a 10wt (if you're not Sedotti)?

I have squid flies from 3in - 18in that I carry in my box. Most of the time i use flies from 6-10in to fish the rips. If you tie them out of synthetics they should be easily casted on a 10wt. One of the keys I find is matching the right color of the squid flies because squid change color they can be any color. This means that when the squid run is happening I have a box full of squid in different sizes and colors.

I tie smaller versions in orange that the fluke love...my best pattern for stripers is cream colored w/blue and pink highlights. Sizes range from 6-12 inches.

Hey Mike
You are correct...pretty simple pattern...
2/0- 8/0 hook (wide gap)
off hook shank:
flash
4 white hackles
6 furnace hackles
EZ Body tubing to form mantle
extend tubing to 1 1/2"-2" past hook bend
big eyes .... goop to EZ Body
Wrap of magnum rabbit over mantle near hook eye
6 furnace hackles splayed around hook over rabbit.
(mix up hackles & rabbit for different color schemes)

Am I the only one who loves to look at squid flies but almost never catches anything with them? Ain't got no squid mojo.

I like squid flies too, but hardly ever use them. I've never gotten a bass on one but I've had some great days when the blues won't eat anything but them. It's usually when they're finning and real spooky down in the Buzzards Bay estuaries. Here's one that I've tied up just for that type of day. For some reason I tie pink squid only.

I use a simple squid pattern that is essentially a long-shanked crystal bugger (use big webby hackles) with a rabbit fur strip for a tail and a little flashabou under the rabbit - a mono loop under the tail will prevent fouling - it's easy to tie in any size or color you need (white has worked best for me) - I either wrap the shank with lead or use dumbbell eyes - the fly won't impress anybody, but it sure as hell works - I've caught bass, albies, blues and bones on it under every condition imaginable, even when there are no squid within a mile

Squid patterns are underutilized on the water. We like to tie them, but forget to fish them. This is proof that they are indeed effective under the right conditions. This fish was taken Thursday, June 22nd along South County, RI.
