i've kayaked the allagash a few times and while i like the river i'm looking for a diffrent adventure. so this year i'm thinking about doing the St Croix.

i'd like to go around the second week in september and was wondering if anyone had any experience on this river. from what i've read on the internet there's seems to be some pretty good small mouth fishing along with various trout types.

is the st croix a busy river? when i've done the allagash we very rarely see any other groups. i'm thinking of doing the vanceboro to grand falls section of the river.

if anyone has any first hand info on this river i'd like to hear from them

The St. Croix is a beautiful river system with great smallmouth fishing and good landlocked salmon fishing through the lake areas. Not crowded at all. Just be sure you understand where the international boundary is whenever you fish or plan to go ashore. June is blackfly season (big-time) but also the best fishing. September should be perfect.

thanks for the info. yes, september has been good to me the last few years. i remeber the first year i did the allagash was in late may, and the blackflies almost drove me insane!!!!!.

the second morning on the river i woke up in my tent and i could hear a pitter patter sound on the tent, i thought it was a light rain but when i opened my eyes i saw no less than 10,000,000,000 black flies trapped between my tent and the rain fly!!!!!!

the section of the st croix i'll most likely be doing is the river part, can i expect the fishing to be any good in this area or is the better fishing in the lake areas?

are the campsites similar to the ones found on the allagash?

I don't know the answers to your questions, but I would assume the smallmouth fishing would be good throughout the river system.
