View Full Version : Where should I take Dad fishing?

My apologies to anyone who saw this on the saltwater board...

I am trying to decide where I should take my dad fishing when he comes to visit in 2 weeks. We will have one day to fish together, the rest being taken up by other tourism and him playing with his grandkids (perhaps giving me some needed rest).

It can be hard to wow him, as he goes to the White River in AR pretty regularly and has had 80-trout weekends there...he can fish for river stripers and huge drum right down the street from his house in Tulsa...and we will be together in SW Montana for our annual pilgrimage in a couple of months.

I was considering the Qunnnie and Trout Brook, but I was there on sunday and the brook was dead vis a vis the dry fly, which is half the fun of going there. I know we could have fun on the main river, but maybe there are some better alternatives right now. I don't think he would want to make the drive all the way to the Farmington, Deerfield or the Westfield, so I am looking for something closer. Has anyone been on the Squannacook or Nissitissit lately?

Any suggestions Reel-Timers? Thanks in advance,

NatickDave

You're going to have a heck of a time trumping any of the fishing he can find down his way. The Deerfield is probably the best place to go since you won't find a stream like that near his home, but you said you don't want to drive that far. The LMB are in pre-spawn stage right now so it's good timing to get a lunker (got a 4 lb-er myself yesterday :) ).

I fished the Swift on Easter Sunday and did quite well in the Fly-only C&R section. I hit for the trifecta for the first time by landing several rainbows, browns and brookies all on the same fly- The freshwater Slam.

You should also know that I am a terrible freshwater fisherman, so if I was able to do as well as I did, anyone with even basic skills should clean up.

NaticDave, this just in from my pops who called to brag about the 8 rainbows he caught this afternoon. All between 10-14 inches on the Westfield west branch by route 20. They were all taken on nymphs in the riffles. I hate him...lol and he used "my" 4wt I left at home. He was told by the guys at the shop that the westfield was stocked 5 days ago. Again nymphs were the hot ticket although I didn't get the details of what particular pattern he used. Hope this helps.

I had some great days on the Millers last year around this time. Looks like they have just stocked it a bunch also.
