The 2 PFD's I have used are the Stohlquist ASEA and the Lotus Mildwater. Both are excellent and feel very comfortable while paddling.

Check out NFS as they have some that are a combination PFD and fishing jacket. Very handy to store stuff but also cary the emergency stuff you want in the event you get seperated from your kayak. I have a plain one that works great, but I wish I had purchased one with pockets. I wear a fishing vest over my PFD to compensate. Also, make sure it is comfortable. Don't buy a real cheap one.

I also like the Lotus Mildwater. I tried several before deciding on this make/model. Comfortable and functional.
This year I started using a SOSpenders with the manual activation. I really like it. I was out Saturday paddling around Sakonnet Point in 15 knots that required lots of paddling and I didn't even feel like a life jacket on.

Check out Sierra Trading Post
I bought a closeout Extrasport PFD from them that I'm very happy with.

Hi Guys
Do you ever use the crewsavers . The type where you pull a cord and they inflate ith comressed air?

That sounds like the SOSpenders I mentioned.

Problem with SOS models are you have to pull the cord. If you get konked on the head you are going under. SOS also assume no malfunction. I like my idiot proof model. I really don't find wearing a jacket an issue. I guess it is like a seatbelt, once you get use to it you don't even think about it.

Let me just say I know of 4 kayakers that had the pull cord type PFD's fail on them. When they pulled the cord it didn't inflate. So I wouldn't trust that type of PFD.
thanks all for your input. the lotus looks good

Not only will the traditional foam type float without fail, it will help you keep your core temp up should you go in. This is a life-saving plus. Whatever you get, be sure that you have it fitted nice and snug. The idea is that it shouldn't move on you causing chafe but should allow full range of motion.

If you want to try a Lotus Mildwater , e-mail me and I'll let you use mine for a paddle. I am located on the Cape side of the Bourne Bridge.
