Hi,
Do any of you guys know what kind of fish this is? We caught a bunch of these in New Brunswick CAN while trying to catch smallies ... maybe a chub? They were about 8in or so in length ... thanks!

Fallfish.

Those guys rock! I used to catch them occasionally when fishing smallies and salmon in NH. They are battlers, but they don't jump!

I've caught tons of those things up in Maine and in Mass. I call them chubs, but, I think it's actually a fallfish. Rarely, I've gotten one 14" or 15" and though it was a trout until final disappointment at landing. While fishing for trout and landlocks, my fishing buddies are often in competition to who will wear the crown of "Chub King". I’m usually wearing it. Check out the link below for more info on fallfish/chubs.

Creek Chub aka Fallfish, aka Hudson River Tarpon, aka Freshwater Bonefish, aka Dog Turd w/ fins...

It's a chub, giant shiner basically. Don't like 'em much.

Yup, a chub. Catch them all the time on nymphs in small NH rivers.

You guys are too funny. You can call a crappie a calico and it is still a crappie.

You can call a fallfish a chub and it is still a fallfish. --125-3

Thanks guys ... figured it was some sort of chub or big shiner, but could never find a good picture of one (good link, thanks) ... had never heard of a fallfish before. I guess chub = fallfish anyway! They do put up a decent fight, but are a bit disappointing if you are hoping it's a trout or bass ... but any fish is better than no fish!

I got one last June out of Grand Lake Stream that was a little over 18". Biggest one I've ever seen, and I called the hatchery up there and they said they'd never seen or heard of one over about 15-16". I spotted it while wading in the shallows in the meadow area of the stream and stalked it, and got it on a black sparkle bugger after it refused two other flies I threw at it. I figured it was a big trout until I hooked it since I'd never seen or heard of one so big, but once it started to fight I could tell it wasn't a trout. I still shake my head when I think about an 18" chub...

A professor of mine at UMass did his thesis on these guys - the one thing that always stuck in my mind was that they build these incredible nests. From the link that was posted above:

Fallfish are group spawners. Males construct nests in stream gravel by carrying stones in their mouths. The round nest can be four feet wide and nearly one and one half feet high.

That is one serious amount of work when you consider the size of the fish and the volume of material they use to make up the nest.
