Anybody have any tips or general advice for fishing the Portland and Astoria , Oregon area ? What flies and time of year is best for steelhead and salmon ? What should I look for as far as reading the water ? I'm a South Florida Snook and Tarpon guy - so intimidated and feeling dumb about the Pacific NW.

i'm not well schooled in saltwater but silver salmon and steelhead are readily available in tide and freshwater on the coast streams.
steelhead is more an inland fishery now but was good on the coast streams winter through spring,i'm talking north coast, some mid and south coast streams are good for summer fish, rogue, umpqua etc.
silvers during the fall can be targeted in tidewater.(and fresh)
chinook or king salmon are also targeted in the fall.some of the biggest chum salmon to be caught are in the kilchis in the fall.
i,ve dragged an anchovy/harring pattern out on the ocean with some success but would hardly call this "flyfishing"
i think les johnson wrote some stuff on saltwater salmon flyfishing but i think most of it was about puget sound fishery olympia/seattle area.
you might research some stuff by dave hughes or "flyfishing the northwest" magazine.
good luck. don't forget, it's not the destination but the journey!

thanks for the helpful info. I like dragging streamers around in the surf - so that will be fine with me. I was just out on long island, NY and the large herring (18" !) were actually actively taking a fly. they look act and jump like a small tarpon so i was pleasantly surprised.

when are you heading over to the other side? I am in the portland area and could point you in the right direction depending on time of year and species wanted. There is alot more than salmon/steelhead over here even though that is the main fisheries.
