We have a wild springtime fishery going on.The 2 rivers are are really lagging behind when compared to the back end of the bay. Efforts by us river rats have been redirected by all of the big weakfish in that area. This will shift shortly as temps increase.
Does anyone out there besides me remember when the only place to nail a weakfish like this was down south in Delaware bay. This species is the best indicator, (other than our shellfish/mullusks that is) of the major league improvements in our water and estuary that have continued to amaze us each year.
Back in the mid seventies there were weaks in the 10lb range caught often and now it seems that that our area is right on the edge of repeating that all over again, except this time we are armed differently.
The twin rivers have resident stripers right now that are spawning in a major way, so the bass action is taking a back seat for the moment, BUT, just remember that many of those migrating chesapeake fish stopover each year in the rivers to feed on the spawning bunker, so the key opportunity for a BIG bass in shallow backwaters is very real for another month or so.
