I'll be visiting the Outer Banks next week for a vacation with my dad, who I don't see very often but is the guy who got me into fishing, so that'll definitely be part of the trip. I'm up for catching whatever we can from shore there since he's not going to be bringing one of his 4 boats along. Yeah, 4.
Any help appreciated on locations/target species/lures/bait. Thanks in advance! :)

Which part of the banks, its a rather long stretch. I have hear about alot of blues near Ocracoke. That area would be my option.

Go on line and check with the different bait shops, etc for Orcacoke. The big drums, cobia , and most everything else seems to be doing well. There is a free state ferry over to Ocracoke. Take the car, and you will be able to wade shallows, fish the surf, or catch a charter. Enjoy. I am going next month when I have a break. The cobia should still be going strong.

Thanks for the info. I did a Google search and got some info for fly fishing for cobia, but it looks like you need at least a 10 wt and my heaviest fly rod is only an 8. The drum can be caught on an 8 wt from what I understand though. The main problem is that we won't have a boat though, and saltwater fishing without a boat can be just plain frustrating. The fish always seem to be just out of reach...

TJ- you might want to check out Capt. Brian Horsley or Capt. Sarah Gardner for some info- I believe they are still called "Flat Out Fly Fishing" and are based in Hatteras. My borther lives on Harker's Island and he said the blues and spanish are outstanding right now- find moving water

Sarah and Brian are fishing out of Oregon Inlet, just north of Hatteras Is. Google outerbanksflyfishing.com--they are great folks and have a good web site too. In Salvo you will be closer to Oregon inlet than Ocracoke. Good Luck--CG
