This Sunday wife and I are taking a quick hope to Sandals, Negril (she won the trip). I was wondering if it was worth it to take the fly rod. Actually, my main concern are the ocean conditions. That is, is the surf heavy or light? I really don't want to be casting into moderate or greater sized waves. Of course, I would prefer calm waters. So, what can I expect?
Oh, BTW, I'm only taking my 8 wt and would love to find some bones or barracuda, but any fish that likes my fly, is welcome to it.

I spent a week there last year and it was FAC every day
you would probally best to bring a Spin outfit and go out to the reef with a local actually if you brought and extra old rod you probally could trade it for a day's fishing on one of there skiffs
They are really not sophisticated when it comes to fishing
it's all about the meat and all the landings i saw were bottom fish that were smaller than bait we use up here
It's a great place to chill out

I went to Jamica for a week, my suggestion is to stay out of the cabs and stay on your resort.

Brought the 8 wt and fished two morning during sunrise outside my hotel room. The water was calm and bueatiful. Waded up to my chest in order to get the flies out to the grassy bottom, or into the clear, white depressions. Blind casted poppers, gurglers and streamers as I wasn't able to sight anything. However, I did catch one very small yellow tailed jack. Saw disturbance about 40' way and quickly cast a streamer there...one hook up and that was it. No problem, mon, Jamaica and the Sandals Resort was a great place to visit even though I didn't bend the long rod too much.
