Thought I would share with you my Thursday night adventure fishing the South Cape area. A friend and I have a deadly method of night fishing a needle fish. Basically it's quite simple: you throw the needle fish out, put the rod in the rod-holder, and just paddle. The fish will soon rise and explode on the plug and all you will hear is water splashing and your drag singing.
First fish started out a nice 27'incher. Soon thereafter, I was paddling with the lure in the water, and then suddenly I heard what sounded like a shotgun blast! My rod went from being 8ft, to being 3ft in a matter of one second. With the fish still on, I didn't know what to do except hand line the fish in. So I proceeded to hand-line (braided) the fish in and came up with a nice 32-33" fat striped bass.
I thought my night was over but I decided to keep fishing with my 3ft long rod since I was trolling. Soon thereafter, another giant strike and I was off again. I can't describe what it's like to catch a keeper on a 3ft rod other than possibly jackhammering concrete.
Normally, I always bring an extra rod, but this time I forgot and this is the first time I ever needed. By the way the rod that broke was an 8ft Tica.
