View Full Version : Johnson 150, 2 stroke - Stinks of Gas

I sea trial'd a boat today with a 1999 Johnson 150, 2 stroke (oil injected) and the engine exhaust reeked of gas/oil. There were no other issues and the engine ran very well but the stink was beyond what I had experienced with other engines. There was also a pretty good gas sheen on the water too. I know that these engines are pretty inefficient (i.e., there is incomplete combustion) but has anyone had a similar experience with this or similar engine? Mechanic said this was typical for this engine.
Looks like the wifey will be on fewer boat trips..I won't be able to take the complaining.
Thanks.

I have a 1992 J200 that smoke like a tire fire and wastes so much gas and oil out the exhaust that I am in the running for "Environmental Enemy #1".
The motor NEVER fails to start and runs like a scalded ape when you drop the hammer. I've put 600 hours on since buying it used 4 years ago and I'm guessing there are over 1500 hours on the clock.
A well maintained carbed Johnson is one of the most reliable (and inefficient) motors ever built.

OK - so you obviously have a rich gas stink when idling and see that sheen in the water around the engine? Mechanic (works for seller) says its normal for this engine and that its just an inefficient gas pig.

That is correct. Every carbed Johnson I have ever met is the same way. Some smoke a little less but all put a sheen on the water.

What you've described is pretty much the way they are... however.
If you're thinking seriously about making that buy have your seller tow the rig to a very competent mechanic of YOUR choice and have that motor checked properly (compression of each cylinder for a start). I'd expect to pay between 50 and 100 bucks to have a Bombardier (or old OMC) certified tech go over the rig carefully and give you an evaluation. I'd particularly like it to be the guy (or gal) that I'd be bringing it to if I bought the rig...
Good Luck.

Bob - I had a compression test done. Results were as follows:
115 105
103 105
103 105
I was there for the test and watched the gauge. So they are all close to each other which is good (or so I hear) but the question is where would the numbers be on a new engine?
Thanks.
