I have been to the Bahamas and throughout the Caribbean many times fishing, but have never rented a car for travel outside the US. I am thinking about renting a car on Grand Bahama on my next trip. Any suggestions or thoughts?

Nothing different except the price ( Hertz, Avis etc.). If you rent from "Fred's cars and cocktails", you may have additional issues. Your credit card co will help with insurance questions.

we usually call it the "Grace L. Furgusson Airline and Storm Door Co." after an old Bob Newhart routine, but I like yours better :)
There is a web forum called Grand Bahama Net or something like that has lots of recomendations/tips for travelers. I recall seeing quite a few recs for one particular local rental co. but I can't recall the name. If "price is no object" go with a "big" name (but don't expect it to be like renting from them in Orlando!). If you've got got some "adventure" in your spirit, try Fred's, and have a cocktail, or eight!

I usually use sean at KSR car Rental or Brads car Rental. Both now have kiosks in the International terminal. They have everything from Vans to Sentras. These are not new cars 8- 10 years old and a definite step above what you can rent on the other Out Islands. Keep in mind that GBI has good roads and you can put some serious miles on a car if you are driving from one end to the other. Its not unususal for me to put 140 to 160 miles per day on a car while on GBI - for this reason I have moved away from the larger vehicles and down to the economy cars - they are more cramped but you are not dropping 70 bucks every other day to fill up the tank.

Remember to look right, and go left at roundabouts. I find that cars with the wheel reversed help me to remember to drive on the wrong side of the road. Your results may vary.

If you rent a car from a known agency, all your insurance will be in order.
However, if you rent a car from a private party, be very careful! Do a search of this forum, and read what happened to my wife and I on Cat a couple years back.
We rented the private car which "came with the home". Real short $$$, and the owner "assured" us all the nessesary, and best coverage was in force.
Well, my wife and I get in a horrible head on collision with a German couple. Both cars were totalled. The German couple rented a car from a legit guy, they had coverage.
When they check my insurance, GUESS WHAT? I had NONE, as in N_O_N_E!
Under their hazy version of the law, I was expected to pay for BOTH CARS according to the authorities.

So, check your coverage.

I agree with Bob on the insurance part - never rent from an agency that does not offer insurance - and do not rely on your credit card to cover either. Both of the agencies mentioned above offer insurance.

for rentals, I would suggest staying with a real company for your first time ou if you use your real name. If you have false ID, use Freds or his sister Shaniqua's classy chassy!
BTW Bill, caught a beaut on Sunday out where we went a year ago. They are dredging a canal across the flat - bisecting the whole flat!

Brad's is the one I've heard good things about (thanks Bonz). I echo all comments below- especially about credit cards providing insurance- in the States, OK, but very risky outside the US.
Frank- that's great! got a pic?
Oh yeah, it's 1 now.

Here's a link for an agency that we were considering. They were well recommended on a couple of the Bahama bulletin boards. Our party of 5 is headed to Freeport next week for 10 days and we decided to take a pass on the car.

Here 'tis last week's offering. I show this pic to show the fly used - tied the night before with mojitos.
She who must be obeyed says that next weekend if I get the front door rescreened I can go get another. Seriously the tides will work next saturday pretty well and it's a 4 day weekend here.
Happy Memorial Day to all the Veterans out there posting. We appreciate your service.
