I'm headed down to Ambergris on Thursday to take a stab at fly fishing for tarpon. I have been told it is an excellent place to fly fish for them, but other people have told me otherwise? Please, any tips or info on what I'm in for would be much appreciated.

You're timing may be right for the larger fish coming north. The guides fish Cangrejo Caye for them, which is about a 15 20 minute boat ride south of SanPedro. Savannah Flats, which is west of Ambergris Caye, holds smaller fish year round. I'm sure that there are resident tarpon on the west side of the island also.

Although my post is after the fact... On two separate ocassions, I spent one week looking for tarpon on the Savanah. I only was interested in sight fishing, didn't bring any sinking lines, but that didn't matter because during those two weeks, I hardly saw any tarpon (first time I had the best tarpon guide there-Nestor Gomez). And, those we did see, weren't hanging out long enough to get a cast too. Very, very bad luck. However, I was just speaking to a top outfitter and he said that Ambergris tarpon fishing has seen better days and he doesn't send clients there anymore. Hope that you have had better luck than I and prove the outfitter to be wrong.

I was staying on caye caulker, about 5-7 miles south of ambergris caye, in late march of 06. Focused mostly on bonefish but spent an afternoon fishing for juvie tarpon (10-30 pounds) on the north end of caye caulker. Brought one to boat saw a bunch had a bunch of missed strikes. I wonder how fished out the waters are.
