Been too busy fishing to file a report. Decided to take a Mother's Day breather today so here it is.

The Canal has slowed down a bit the past two days. Lots of hits Friday at the Herring Run Friday but only a couple of 25 inch fish to show for it. Only a couple of keepers seen in vicinity of run. Noted a lot more just-legal fish in the West end, although I arrived too late to fish the best part of it. A couple more small schoolies east of the run and a bunch of runs and drops.

Saturday, Thunder Rod and I assaulted the Ditch again and it was even slower than Friday. Tally: two schoolies for me and one 31 incher and 1st keep of season for him. Hit all the usual spots in the West end and mid Canal. That was it for an entire day of fishing. Surprisingly few people fishing the run on a Saturday. The weather was cool but really not a deterrent.

The news is that the blues made landfall on the Cape south side Friday. Numbers up to double digits landed in late afternoon to dusk in all the traditional early spots. These early fish seem skittish and you have to switch plugs until you get hits. They mostly wanted small to medium sized white/red or yellow/red Gibbs poppers. Wouldn't touch a Ranger plug or Atom. That will change as waters warm.

Saturday, sorry to say, the fishing plain sucked.

Bill and me (I met Bill right here on the Reel-Time.Com posting forum) humped live herring all around the Aptuxet end of the Canal with hardly a bump. Before taking a chance on those aforementioned Blue's at South Cape Beach, we stopped by the usual point at the Herring Run. (as we have all week) Surprised at the lack of (Zoo) crowds, we humped yet more live herring back down to the same hole we'd been fishing previously.

Painfully slow..........

However, I did managed one bite and run at least. Hooked and landed a fat 31" striper. First bite and last.
Nothing for the next hour or more.........and only saw 2 small, 20" or so schoolies landed on either sidein 3 hours.

So, haven't had grilled Striper for Mother's Day in quite
a while, and in releasing more than my share of 29" - 30" Bass so far in '00, I was happy to take home my first grill'er of the year.

Anyway, I'll be heading to Maine (Little Sebago Lake) next weekend for some overdue Brown trout and smallie action.
FWIW the Bass I cleaned yesterday was full with 2 whole
herring in it's stomach.

Good Luck and I'll see ya on the rocks.
