My kayak paddle has an aluminium shaft.
It has enough salt corrosion that it hasn' t come apart in about 4 years.
Is there anything I can do to break it down?
I'd like to be able to transport it in the new smaller car

Try running under hot water if nothing else it may remove some of the corrosion. Then try copious amounts of a good penetrating oil/lubricant. WD-40 comes to mind. Give it a lot of torque/twist when trying to separate the pieces.
If everything fails buy a new one . If and when you buy one always separate it at the end of the trip and rinse it good.
I don't know if anybody else has any other ideas but give these a try. The aluminum will only oxidize a to certain depth before the corrosion itself stops the oxidizing process. So once it's apart it should be good to go with a clean up using scotchbrite or a fine sandpaper.
Good Luck.

give it a good soaking with PB Blaster, let it sit for a few hours, soak it again. That is some good stuff!!! Available at most auto parts places.
good luck

I had the same problems with my paddles....i tried the hot water trick, didn't work. Now I've just accepted that my paddles are one piece and not two...a bit of an inconvenience in the car but not too bad.

A few months back there was a thread about rods that were stuck together.
I posted a little trick that allways works for me.
Tape some duct tape around a short section of wooden dowel, leaving some hanging off the dowel, (make two). Then tape the wooden dowels butted ends together on each side of the paddle jiont. Now you have a leveage advantange when you twist in opposite directions. Works slick on stuck rods, may also work on stuck paddles?
Good luck...

Thanks all
I've been soakin' the shaft in 3in1 oil for 3 days.
I'm gonna try scruffy's duct tape/ dowel trick asap.
If that doesn't work, then I'll see if I can find the pb blaster
It's been a one piece for so long I can accept that too.

Just finished tring to torque it with broomhandles and duct tape.
Result...1 broken broom handle , many layers of ripped duct tape.
Rigged it up a second time with hose clamps over the duct tape
Result... broken hose clamps
I'm getting to like BC's hang it out the window idea.

"Butt ends together" --126-3-
In line with the paddles shaft, not perpendicular. Then twist.
No way can you break a dowel, you will crush the shaft first.

I'll try again
