have a evinrude 48 spl, engine idles and starts fine, but wont throttle up, both cylanders firing, clean carbs,new tanks and hose new plugs. could this be an electrical problem.... can anybody tell me how to check the pack? or a website with dianostics i can check out....thanks chris..

"Usually" powerpacks can't be tested, as can coils, stators, and timer bases can. Do you see any "goop" dripping down from under the flywheel when you look under there? Does that model have the optical eye for the CDI ignition? That sets/checks the timing and you're probably not seeing the timing advance (due to that, the powerpack or something else) as that would build up the RPMs as the throttle plates open up.

Without the factory/OEM service manual .. electrical issues can be tough to diagnose and even then, some parts require special instruments by companies like Sierra or Stevens Instruments. Some parts in the CDI system can put out up to 45,000 volts ... so you had better be careful ...

Without the OEM manual (and not a Clymer or Seloc) on hand, I'd have a pro look at it. It could be something simple ... maybe not cheap, but hopefully simple.

If the power pack went, the motor would most likely "shut down". At least thats the experience I had. After 20" of running, she just cut out.
