My brother is headed to Nicaragua in August for business, and will be in the Rivas area.

I think he has an offshore charter scheduled, but he wants to know if anyone has any input on fishing from shore. Things like any particular areas? Should he bring a fly rod or a spinning rod, or both? What lures?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Also, does anyone know the current scoop on bringing tackle onboard the plane. I haven't done it in while, I'm wondering what the regs are lately. Can he load a couple rods and some lures in a rugged rod tube, then have the attendant put it up front in the storage closet?

TIA,
Chuckster

don't plan on taking anything on a/planes..........certainly no lures - and I have had 2 fly rods forcibly checked..................my advice is to check them upfront, "lock" them with plastic ties..............................the lack of stress is better t han the 20mins waiting for the bags/tubesa t the other end.

not mch fishing from shore on Pacific side.. north of San Juan del Sr are some great coves that hold some fish,, though was more into surfing there,, if you get a chance,, try to head down the Rio San Juan boarder of Costa and Nic.. where you see 150lbs tarpon rolling in the rapids and nice size snook blasting the surface.. a beautiful river loaded with fish.. you can fly to San Carlos and take the boat down to El Castillo and hire one of the two fishing guides,, bring your gear,, and don't worry about flying with it.. I never had any problems. there accomidations from 50-75 us to 4 us I was at the later and the fish did not mind... if youwant more info let me know..

belizemon,

I'll be in San Juan del Sur in January and am packing surf casting gear and flyrods. Any suggestions for SJ del Sur? What is the easiest way to get to Lago de Nicaragua and/or Rio San Juan from SJ del Sur?

Carry-on allowance is not consistent, but the odds are quite good. Rods are typically up to the airline, they might be bigger than the carry-on size limits, and there is a (slight) chance TSA might say no. Flies and reels are actually recommended to carry on by the TSA (see their website), and small flies for bonefish etc. should not be a problem. Larger ones for offshore fishing are more questionable. Ultimately, the final call is made by the local TSA staff, so there are no guarantees. I usually take everything on-board, but make sure there is a plan B in place, which is to bring a small backpack in your carryon and have sufficient time to check-in (typically ~45 min prior to departure). Worst case, you rearrange your stuff, double back and check the prohibited things. Luggage loss is rare, but delays are frequent, so it's definitely worth the hassle to carry-on, IMO.
