What's the best way to modify a lure that comes from the retailer with double
trebles (Yo-zuri Hydro Popper etc etc)? One single hook on the tail end, re-
place both or what.

Also, how about the hooks. Sizes, styles, etc.

Thanks

I use gamakatsu live bait H.D. hooks in 7/0 and put on size 9 stainless split rings.

Old Mill,

Like CapeCodKid I like Gami's for lots of things but
after scrutinizing just about every hook I could get my hands on I settled on 1 treble and 1 single. The treble is an Owner ST-41BC 2X strong 2/0 in a black chrome finish. This hook has it all. It is extra short so that the points dont ride too far behind the back of the lure, and is razor sharp with a slight inward "claw" to the point, and a perfect size barb. I closely inspected one of these after an hour 40 minute slugfest with a 200# range tuna and found not the slightest bending or weld cracking. Just as important is that they are far lighter than many heavy duty trebles out there. I only place these at the back of the lure, removing rings and hooks from the front. I use these on all my plugs except the Jr. size Chugbugs which are too light for any treble with adequate strength. For these I use...

The single is a Tiemco 600SP in sizes 2/0 to 6/0 depending on lure size. These are actualy bluewater fly hooks. All my metals get these. They are super short, razor sharp and can lift a truck. Best of all they have an extra large eye to accept 80-100# range flourocarbon shock tippets. This is where all the others fall short IMHO. The eyes are too small to take a strong split ring and still swivel freely. This dampens lure action (the tail wagging lure has to drag the hook back and forth through the resistance of water rather than having it swivel freely). I also feel that a "jammed" hook/ring will wear a bigger hole faster during the fight.

I much prefer the Owner Hyperwire or Spro split rings. They have great strength/size ratios. They cost alot more but they're worth it. Anything to gain stealth without sacrificing strength.

Good Luck out there..
