Hi,
Long time no-type.
Going to South Andros next week. Can I take the rod (4-piece) and reel as a carry on? Also can fly box's go as carry-ons as well.
Thanks!
Greg
Yes to all three. If you check out the website for the TSA they have a section that talks about fishing gear. Having said that, we split up our flies so that some were packed and some were carry on. I even printed the web page from their site in case their was a problem. As the guy said to me, it depends on whose screening that day.
Where are you staying?

Be ready for anything, some of the TSA morons have POWER something they never had before 9/11. I wonder if they even had jobs before then.
Print out the section about tools also and hope they can read. --125-3

Just because the TSA website says you can bring it on doesn't mean the ape at the security checkpoint won't give you a hard time. Some of them are on a power trip and will give you a hard time for no reason. Personally, I carried on 3 rods in separate tubes, a fly reel, two spinning reels, extra lines, boxes of spinning tackle, and a couple of boxes of flies all in one backpack and didn't get any trouble from security at any point on my way to/from South Andros a couple of years ago.
The one thing that seems to give people the most trouble is carrying flies on board. Apparently they're a great tool to hijack a plane with... :)

Just got back from travelling and saw a guy who had to check his rod not because of the rod but the case. TSA said the rod was OK but he could use the case to beat someone up. He was about 70 and frail.
Go figure
